The North Carolina Botanical Garden is sponsoring an extensive series of programs about the biotic significance of longleaf pine savannas, and efforts to conserve and restore them. Many of the programs are “hybrid” with online access for those who cannot physically attend. The offerings are numerous and diverse, including field trips, art classes, and lectures on history and cultural aspects of longleaf; biology and identification of trees, herbs, herps, & RCW; the role of fire and more. The May 30 lecture will focus on the history of the Sandhills Conservation Partnership, how it has been used as a model for collaborative conservation, and lessons that can be applied to other environmental conflicts. Lecture/trip leaders include many Sandhill Conservation Partnership members. Please consider attending, and forward this information to friends, neighbors, teachers, and others who might benefit!

With smart investment and continued public support, North Carolina can make our roads safer for people and wildlife alike.

This video was created in partnership with the team at Right of Passage to bring wildlife-vehicle collision hotspots to bring the locations into vivid focus. Witness how roads fragment natural landscapes across North Carolina and learn about the wildlife that must navigate them to survive.

"One of the most inspiring conservation stories in American history is playing out on, of all places, a live-fire training ground at Ft. Bragg Army base in North Carolina. There, an improbable alliance is giving a special bird—the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker (RCW)—a new lease on life. After a clash between U.S. Fish and Wildlife and the U.S. Army revealed that low grade forest fires sparked by artillery and tracers inadvertently created excellent woodpecker habitat, the two sides joined forces to monitor and protect the birds on the base. Landowners on nearby properties are joining the effort—putting aside mutual suspicions and using fire to save the RCW and ignite a passion for wildlife."

Sandhills Conservation Partnership -

Longleaf was the focus of the fall issue of The Nature Conservancy’s magazine. The issue featured Sandhills Prescribed Burn Association coordinator, Jesse Wimberley, Jackie Britcher and Stacy Huskins of Fort Bragg, and TNC's Calloway Preserve, among many other treasured and important areas supporting longleaf.

For millennia, longleaf pine forests stretched 92 million acres across the U.S. Southeast. Today, less than 5 million acres remain. But a growing effort to recover this ecosystem is taking root.
