🔋📱 We know your phone goes everywhere with you. Just make sure its charger isn't creating a fire hazard!

A few battery and charging safety reminders from SSFD:

⚡ Use chargers approved for your device.
⚡ Charge electronics on a hard, stable surface.
⚡ Keep charging devices away from bedding and other combustible materials.
⚡ Don't use batteries or chargers that are swollen, damaged, or overheating.
⚡ Follow the manufacturer's guidance for charging and storage.

And please, don't ignore a battery that starts acting strangely. Overheating, swelling, smoke, or unusual odors can be warning signs.

A little caution goes a long way!

The first chilly night always seems to sneak up on us here on the Outer Banks.

Before you plug in that space heater, give it a quick safety check!

🔥 Keep heaters at least three feet from anything that can burn.
🔌 Plug electric space heaters directly into a wall outlet.
🛏️ Turn heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
🚪 Keep heaters away from doorways and escape routes.
👀 Never leave a heater operating unattended.

If you're using a fireplace, make sure it's been properly inspected and that your chimney is clean.

Stay warm, stay safe, and don't let a little cold weather create a big problem.

🧯 BE HONEST… DO YOU KNOW HOW TO USE YOUR FIRE EXTINGUISHER?

A lot of people have one.

Fewer people have actually picked it up.

And even fewer want to learn how when there's already a fire happening. 😂

Take a minute when things are calm to locate your extinguisher and familiarize yourself with it.

Know:

📍 Where it is
👀 What type of fire it's designed for
🧯 How to operate it
🚪 Where your exit is

And remember:

A fire extinguisher is not a substitute for calling 911 and getting out safely.

If a fire is growing or you aren't comfortable using the extinguisher, get out and call 911.

Your extinguisher should be easy to reach…

YOUR PHONE CHARGER MIGHT BE TIRED.

And unlike you…

It doesn't get to take a vacation. 😂

Take a quick look at the charging cords and power strips around your house.

Do you see:

⚠️ Frayed wires?
⚠️ Exposed wiring?
⚠️ Melted plastic?
⚠️ Loose connections?
⚠️ Power strips overloaded with adapters?

If so, it's time for a replacement.

Electrical equipment can generate heat, and damaged cords or overloaded outlets can create a fire hazard.

This is especially worth checking in homes where phones, tablets, laptops, fans, TVs, and other electronics seem to multiply overnight.

📱 Charge your devices.

🔌 Don't overload your outlets.

🔥 Replace damaged cords.

And maybe give that 2014 phone charger you've been keeping alive with electrical tape a well-deserved retirement.

It has served you long enough. 😂
