At approximately 2:30 today South group auto aid was alerted to a fire in the fields at Sparta Woodworks. Units arrived to a controlled burn that had spread to the surrounding area and an agricultural field containing beans and was fast moving. Sparta Fire and North End Fire departments were requested quickly for extra manpower and brush trucks.

The fire was contained to about 50% by Sparta Woodworks employees using fire extinguishers which kept the fire in check until the units arrived to begin extinguishing the fire.

The fire burned approximately 2 acres.

Units on scene included Central View Fire, Sparta Fire, Doyle Fire, Hickory Valley Fire and North End Fire Departments.

Central View Deputy Chief Thomas Steele credits the staff at the business, “The employees at Sparta Woodworks quick thinking and familiarity with using fire extinguishers and the interagency cooperation, and rapid response saved a large agricultural field from total loss.”

Department leadership is encouraging our communities and business to refrain from burning until substantial rain comes to reduce the effects of the drought.
