**Workshop Opportunity**🕯🐝

Discover one of the oldest traditional uses of beeswax in this hands-on workshop celebrating craft, tradition, and the fascinating world of honeybees. Participants will learn how beeswax is processed and prepared for candle making before creating their own candles using two different techniques.

During the workshop, you’ll make:
– Four hand-dipped beeswax candles
– One 4 oz. beeswax jar candle

And there’s more to this class than candle making!

A local beekeeper will join us to share an inside look at beekeeping and life in the hive—from how a colony works together to the important role honeybees play in our environment and the incredible products they create.

To register visit the link: https://www.alleghanyartscouncil.org/events/taste-of-the-arts-presents-from-hive-to-home-beeswax-candle-making/

You’ll leave with five handmade candles, new skills, and a whole new appreciation for the work that happens inside a beehive.

Heritage & Homestead workshops celebrate traditional skills, handmade crafts, and practical knowledge worth carrying forward.

Space is limited. Register today and join us for this unique hands-on experience!

Fall is a time for planting and preparing for the upcoming growing season. It is also a good time to submit soil samples to the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services for agronomic recommendations specific to what you are growing.

Now is also the time to submit soil samples for faster turnaround times and to avoid peak-season testing fees. Soil testing is free for North Carolina residents from April 1, 2026, through Nov. 30, 2026. Learn more in the release below!

On the SNAP application, the word "household" refers to people who live together and buy and cook food together. 🏠

College roommates, for example, would be considered two separate households if they don't buy and cook their meals together. Parents living with adult children may also be considered separate households.

Knowing your household size is important as that determines the income limits you will have to follow to find out if you are eligible for SNAP.

Have questions? If you would like to find out if you are eligible for SNAP, call the More In My Basket office at 1-855-240-1451.

🐴 SENIOR HORSE CHECK-IN: Plan before the cold arrives!

As colder weather approaches, take time to assess your senior horse’s condition and care needs. Identifying concerns now gives you time to work with your veterinarian on a plan.

✅ BODY CONDITION
Record your horse’s body condition score (BCS) and estimated weight. Use your hands as well as your eyes-a thickening coat can hide weight loss. Continue monitoring through the season.

✅ DENTAL HEALTH
Keep dental exams current. Discuss difficulty chewing, dropped feed, or changes in eating habits with your veterinarian.

✅ OVERALL HEALTH & COMFORT
Review changes in appetite, movement, behavior, and weight. A veterinary exam can help identify problems and guide an individual care plan.

✅ FEEDING & ACCESS
Make sure your horse can comfortably reach feed, water, and shelter. Match the feeding plan to their dental function, body condition, and nutritional needs.

Whether your winters are mild or severe, proactive senior care matters.
