Gas heat doesn't always mean no oil tank. πŸ‘€

Last week in Elizabeth, we swept a gas-heated home and found a 550-gallon oil tank still buried out back by the bushes. It had been decommissioned years ago, but never removed. Old fuel lines in the basement pointed us right to it, even with the vent and fill pipes long gone.

Those orange flags? That's us marking the spot on-site so there's no guesswork. 🚩

Quick heads up for homeowners: reinforced concrete (rebar or wire mesh) and spots under grills or AC units can't be scanned. We always tell you what we couldn't check, not just what we found.

Good news: this homeowner is moving forward with removal, and we're taking care of it for them.

Thinking about buying or selling? Get a sweep first. Same-day reports and guaranteed results.

Have a private well and a septic system on the same property? This one's for you. πŸ‘πŸ’§

Your water can look, smell, and taste completely normal and still contain bacteria or nitrates from a failing septic system. The only way to know is a lab test.

Watch for these warning signs:
🚩 Sewage backing up in the house
🚩 Soggy or unusually green grass over the septic area
🚩 Slow or gurgling drains, especially after heavy rain
🚩 A recent flood or damage to your well

We break down what to test for, NJ setback distances, and what to do if a test comes back positive πŸ‘‰ https://www.atsenvironmental.com/blog/septic-system-well-water-contamination-nj/

Nothing's more stressful than watching your closing date slip because someone else won't return a call. 😩

Becky's home inspection flagged the oil tank, and the seller dragged their feet. So she called us. We showed up fast, tested the tank, and she closed right on schedule. πŸ‘πŸ”‘

Thank you for the kind words, Becky, and congratulations on your new home! πŸŽ‰

Big improvement for a homeowner in Mount Olive! 🚜

The crew tackled a full round of repairs on this system:
πŸ”§ New locking lid + risers on the treatment tank
πŸ”§ Riser added to the second tank
πŸ”§ Replaced the conveyance line running to the D-box
πŸ”§ Brand new distribution box installed

Why it matters: risers bring your tank access up to ground level, so future pump-outs and inspections don't require digging up the yard every time. And a fresh D-box keeps wastewater flowing evenly to the drainage field, which is what protects your system (and your lawn) for the long haul.

Not sure when your septic was last serviced? Give us a call, we'll take a look. πŸ’§

Tank sweep of the day: Belvidere, NJ

This home runs on oil with an active aboveground tank in the basement. But the real find was outside: cut fuel lines coming out the back, and an inactive 550-gallon underground tank buried under the rear concrete. We marked it in orange so there's no guessing where it sits.

The seller may not have even known it was there, and that's exactly why sweeps matter. A hidden underground tank can turn into a five-figure surprise for whoever buys the house.

Heads up for anyone with an older property: overgrown vegetation can block a full scan. We couldn't clear the entire left side here, so we noted it honestly instead of calling the property clean.

Just got a failed septic inspection and you're mid-sale? Take a breath, it doesn't automatically kill the deal.

A failed system in New Jersey can still be sold. Depending on your situation, you might repair before closing, negotiate a price reduction, set up a repair credit or escrow holdback, or sell as is. And "failed" often means a single component, not a whole new system.

Our new post walks through your options, what you're required to disclose, and how to keep your closing on track. πŸ‘‡

Start to finish on a septic system install in Riverdale, NJ! 🚜

Ever heard of a septic distribution box? πŸ€”

It's a small box that sits between your septic tank and your drain field, and its whole job is to split wastewater evenly across every drain line. When it fails, from cracking, settling, or roots working their way in, the flow gets uneven and one part of your drain field takes on way more than it should. Left alone, that can shorten the life of the entire field.

The good news: repairing or replacing a D-box is one of the more straightforward septic fixes when it's caught early. Here's how we handle it, step by step πŸ‘‡

βœ… Locate and carefully expose the box
βœ… Inspect for damage, collapse, and root intrusion
βœ… Remove the broken or failing parts
βœ… Install a new, level D-box and reconnect the lines
βœ… Level it and test the flow to make sure it's evenly distributed
βœ… Backfill, grade, and restore the yard

Not sure if your D-box is the problem? We're happy to take a look. Give us a call at πŸ“ž 800-440-8265.

Planning to build a home in New Jersey without access to public sewer? Your septic system is one of the biggest questions you will need to answer, and the price tag can swing anywhere from about $20,000 to $50,000 or more.

That range is not random. Soil type, groundwater, bedrock, bedroom count, and what each contractor includes in their quote all move the number. Our latest guide walks you through the real costs, the different system types (conventional, pressure-distribution, mound, advanced treatment), when installation happens during construction, and the NJ permits you will need before excavation.

We also cover the soil conditions common across Sussex, Morris, and Warren counties, plus the costly mistakes to avoid when planning a new system.

At ATS, engineering, permitting, and installation come as one all-inclusive scope, backed by 30+ years across New Jersey.
