Today, Westview-Fairforest Fire Department B-Shift went to Westview Elementary School for Fire Prevention for Kindergarten to First Grade. WFFD has had a busy month of Fire Prevention, as October is Fire Prevention Month.

It was also their Farmer's Day, so if you see some cute farmers in the mix it's Dorman vs Spartan High tonight.

We love visiting the children at the school and daycares and making sure they learn at an early age about fire safety! WFFD Setting the Standard.

Halloween is a fun time for adults and children, but always follow some simple safety tips to keep everyone safe!

Walk Safely

-Cross the street at corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.
-Put electronic devices down, keep heads up and walk, don’t run, across the street.
-Teach children to make eye contact with drivers before crossing in front of them.
-Always walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible. Children should walk on direct routes with the fewest street crossings.
-Watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Teach children to never dart out into the street or cross between parked cars.
-Join kids under age 12 for trick-or-treating. If kids are mature enough to be out without supervision, tell them to stick to familiar areas that are well lit and trick-or-treat in groups.

Costumes for a Safe Halloween

-Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors.
-Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision.
-Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.
-When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.

Drive Extra Safely on Halloween

-Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods.
-Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.
-Take extra time to look for kids at intersections, on medians and on curbs.
-Enter and exit driveways and alleys slowly and carefully.
-Get rid of any distractions - like your phone - in your car so you can concentrate on the road and your surroundings.
-Turn your headlights on earlier in the day to spot children from greater distances.
-Popular trick-or-treating hours are 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Be especially alert for kids during those hours.

WFFD hopes everyone has a Happy and Safe Halloween!

Today, October 28, 2026, is National First Responders Day, a dedicated day of gratitude to honor the roughly 4.6 million firefighters, EMT's, paramedics, police officers, and 911 dispatchers across the United States. Officially designated by Congress, this day recognizes the incredible selflessness of those who run toward danger to protect our communities.

Westview-Fairforest Fire Department would like to wish all our Officers and Staff a Happy First Responders Day.

We appreciate all you do for us and our Community this day and everyday!

CHANGE YOUR CLOCKS - CHANGE YOUR BATTERIES!

This Sunday, Nov 1st at 2 am, we set our clocks back one hour. Yes we get an extra hour of sleep!

It's a good time to change your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detector batteries. Also to make sure they are clean of dust and debris.

The following is information from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to help make sure all smoke alarms have working batteries, accounting for the multiple types of smoke alarms on the market and their varying battery requirements:

-- Smoke alarms with non-replaceable 10-year batteries are designed to remain effective for up to 10 years. If the alarm chirps, warning that the battery is low, replace the entire smoke alarm right away.

-- Smoke alarms with any other type of battery need a new battery at least once a year. If that alarm chirps, warning the battery is low, replace the battery right away.

-- When replacing a battery, follow manufacturer’s list of batteries on the back of the alarm or manufacturer’s instructions. Manu-facturer’s instructions are specific to the batteries (brand and model) that must be used. The smoke alarm may not work properly if a different kind of battery is used.

-- Replace all smoke alarms, including those that use ten-year batteries and hard-wired alarms, when they are ten years old or sooner if they don't respond properly when tested.

Contact your local Fire Department if you need help with replacing your batteries or new smoke alarms. Some may have grants to offer free smoke alarms, but will help you installing your purchased smoke alarms.
