Talkin' Trash with Jes is back and in this episode, Jes and Osha Spearman, our Environmental Enforcement Inspector, discuss best practices for your city solid waste and recycling roll carts.

♻️️ Do space your roll carts 3 feet from each other and from any obstacle like mailboxes, fire hydrants, or vehicles
♻️️ Do roll your cart out prior to sunrise on your designated collection day and roll it back before sunset the following day
♻️️ Do check our website to ensure you're recycling the right materials loose in your blue bin: https://www.cityofspartanburg.org/163/Recycling

🚫 Don't put electronics or tires on the curb; those need to be taken to a Spartanburg County recycling center that accepts those materials
🚫 Don't overflow your roll carts; if they lids don't close, take the overflow materials to a Spartanburg County recycling center or request an additional bin for a fee on the City website

If you've got questions, feel free to leave them in the comments or call our Public Works department at 864-596-3690.

January 2027 marks the 40th anniversary of the City's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Week Celebration.

We've got 3 amazing opportunities to honor Dr. King's vision by uplifting youth across Spartanburg County, and we encourage students of all ages to celebrate Dr. King and his message.

🎨 Our art contest is open to any Spartanburg County K-8 student with the theme, "40 Years of Unity: Let's Create Together. What will You Do to Carry the Dream Forward?" Students may submit their artwork through their school's art teacher.

💫 The Youth Humanitarian Award honors a Spartanburg County K-12 student making a positive impact in the community who exemplifies the spirit of good will, volunteerism, philanthropy, and humanitarianism. Nomination applications can be found on our website (link below).

🎓 Our scholarship essay contest is open to any Spartanburg County high school senior. We are awarding two $1,000 scholarships to Spartanburg County high school seniors who submit an essay based on the prompt provided in the application on our website (link below).

The deadline for all of these youth opportunities is Friday, November 20th. You can find full details, including applications, at https://www.cityofspartanburg.org/202/Dr-Martin-Luther-King-Jr-Unity-Week-Cele.

October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month. This month-long observance seeks to educate and raise awareness about bullying and cyberbullying prevention. Addressing and preventing bullying is something that everyone can do, every day:

❤ Educators can create a safe, supportive learning environment with a classroom culture of respect for all

💛 Parents & caregivers can speak with children about in-person and digital bullying, and model positive behavior, while encouraging open communication

💙 Community members can serve as mentors, modeling respect, kindness, and support with positive reinforcement.

Encourage the youth in your life to speak with a trusted adult if they witness or experience bullying or cyberbullying.
