🚒🔥 Fire Prevention Week 2026 - That's a Wrap!
Spencer Fire-Rescue recently wrapped up another successful Fire Prevention Week! This year's theme was “Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower!”

From September 28 through October 9, our firefighters visited local schools and welcomed students to the fire station to share important fire safety lessons.

📊 2026 Fire Prevention Highlights:
🏫 9 schools participated
đźš’ 1,535 students reached, preschool through 6th grade
👨‍🚒 11 firefighters participated
⏱️ 47 personnel hours dedicated to fire safety education

Students learned about lithium-ion battery safety, smoke alarms, home escape plans, fire extinguishers, and firefighter protective equipment.

A Special Thank You!
Planning for Fire Prevention Week begins each March. A special thank you to Lt. Steve Grimmius, whose dedication and countless hours coordinating this program each year are essential to its success!
We also thank our firefighters, local schools, and generous area businesses whose support and donations help make this educational program possible.

🔥 Fire prevention doesn't end after Fire Prevention Week! Fire safety isn't just about knowing what to do when a fire occurs—it's about making safe choices every day to prevent one from starting.

And remember:
🔌 Use the correct charger.
🪵 Charge on a hard, flat surface.
🔥 Stop using batteries that become unusually hot, swollen, or damaged.
🔋 Unplug devices when fully charged.
đź›´ Use extra care with e-bikes, scooters, power tools, and other large battery-powered equipment.
♻️ Dispose of lithium-ion batteries properly—never in household trash or regular recycling.

Safe charging really can be a superpower—because preventing the fire is always better than fighting it.

🛴🚲🔧 FOR TOOLS AND RIDES, THINK BIGGER BATTERY—BIGGER RISK.

E-bikes, electric scooters, cordless power tools, and similar equipment use larger lithium-ion battery packs capable of storing significant amounts of energy.

NFPA recommends charging these larger items outside when possible.

When charging:

âś… Use manufacturer-approved charging equipment.
âś… Charge away from combustible materials.
âś… Never charge a damaged battery.
âś… Keep exits and escape routes clear.
âś… Store batteries in an environmentally controlled area.
âś… Never modify the battery or charger.

🔥 Because these batteries contain more stored energy, a fire can grow rapidly if something goes wrong.

Never block your way out with something you're charging.

🔋 FULLY CHARGED? TIME TO UNPLUG.

Once your device is fully charged, unplug it.

Leaving devices continuously connected to charging equipment can increase heat and place unnecessary stress on the battery.

Whenever possible:

âś… Charge while you are awake and nearby.
âś… Unplug the device after it reaches a full charge.
âś… Inspect cords and chargers for damage.
âś… Never charge a battery that is damaged.

⚡ Charge it. Unplug it. Use it safely.

🔥 FEELS HOT? STOP USING IT.

Lithium-ion batteries usually provide warning signs when something is wrong.

Stop using or charging a device if you notice:

• Excessive heat
• Swelling or bulging
• A strange or unusual odor
• Leaking
• Smoke
• Popping or hissing sounds
• Changes in the battery's appearance

A damaged lithium-ion battery can overheat and enter thermal runaway, potentially producing intense heat, fire, toxic gases, and rapidly spreading flames.

⚠️ Don't ignore the warning signs.

If a battery appears damaged, don't attempt to modify or repair it yourself. Have repairs performed by a qualified professional.

🛏️ SOFT SURFACE? HARD PASS.

Charging your phone under your pillow, on your bed, or buried beneath blankets might seem convenient—but it can trap heat around the device and battery.

Lithium-ion batteries and chargers naturally produce heat while charging. Soft surfaces such as beds, couches, pillows, and blankets can restrict airflow and allow heat to build.

âś… Charge phones, tablets, laptops, and other devices on a hard, flat surface such as a countertop, desk, table, or bare floor.

❌ Don't charge devices underneath pillows or blankets.

🔥 Give your device room to breathe while it charges.

Use the Right Charger
🔌 CHEAP CHARGER? DON’T CHANCE IT.

Not every charger or replacement battery is created equal.

Use the charging cord and equipment that came with your device or equipment specifically approved by the manufacturer.

Cheap, counterfeit, damaged, or incompatible chargers may not provide the protection your battery needs and can increase the risk of overheating and fire.

When purchasing lithium-ion battery products, look for products that have been tested by a nationally recognized testing laboratory, such as UL, ETL, or CSA.

⚡ The few dollars you save on an unapproved charger aren’t worth the risk of a fire.

⚡ FIRE PREVENTION WEEK 2026 ⚡

This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme is:

“Charge into Fire Safety™ — Safe Charging Is a Superpower!”

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the things we use every day—phones, tablets, laptops, power tools, e-bikes, scooters, and more. When these batteries are damaged, improperly charged, or paired with the wrong equipment, they can overheat and start a serious fire.

Throughout Fire Prevention Week, Spencer Fire-Rescue will be sharing simple steps you can take to safely charge, use, and store lithium-ion battery-powered devices.

🔥 A few small changes in how you charge your devices can make a big difference in preventing a fire.

Follow along this week and put your charging superpowers to work!
