Thanks to everyone who was able to join us last night for the Spokane City Council District 1 town hall at the Northeast Community Center!

A special thanks to the Northeast Community Center for hosting, to Council Member Sarah Dixit and her legislative assistant, Sebastian, for taking the lead, and to my legislative assistant, Shae, for helping pull it all together.

We heard from Parks and Urban Forestry and had a fun Q&A with the folks in the room.

Vina and I had a great time at the Kalispel Tribe’s 5th Annual Better Together Celebration Dinner last night! It was a nice evening and a chance to catch up with lots of friends, including former Spokane City Councilwoman Karen Stratton.

A big thank you to the German American Society for inviting me once again to tap the keg and kick off Saturday’s festivities at the annual Oktoberfest celebration at the Deutsches Haus! It was a great time and it’s always one of the best events of the year! 🍻

I spent the morning with our Downtown Police Captain Kurtis Reese touring the downtown core and seeing what he and his officers see at the start of each day.

I was admittedly skeptical, but there are some encouraging signs, and SPD deserves a lot of credit. We still have a long ways to go. Further progress will likely require hiring more officers and giving SPD additional tools. Right now, many private property owners are stepping up with security investments and physical improvements, which I’m grateful for, and while some of those measures are appropriate and their responsibility, they also shouldn’t be forced to shoulder so much of the broader burden.

I couldn’t be more grateful for Captain Reese’s leadership and his commitment to downtown.

I was glad to attend Spokane County Commissioner Mary Brooks’ State of the County presentation today. It was especially nice to see retiring County Auditor Vicky Dalton recognized for her many years of service, along with some really thoughtful words from others honoring Commissioner Brooks as she approaches the end of her final term as County Commissioner. It was a meaningful event overall.

I’m very grateful that my wife and I were able to attend today’s very moving 25th anniversary remembrance ceremony of September 11 at Fairchild Air Force Base. It’s hard to believe that a quarter century has passed since the horrific terror attacks on our nation. It is a day I will never forget. I couldn’t be more grateful for the men and women who stepped up then, and who continue to step up today to protect us, from our civilian first responders to the men and women who serve in our Armed Forces.
