Spokane’s Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center welcomed Japanese exchange students from the Mukogawa Institute’s Pharmacy training program. The annual site-visit brought students face-to-face with the Pharmacy team at the main medical center campus, where they learned how VA’s evidence-based whole health model includes the Veteran’s entire health system, not just the medications treating their symptoms or ailments.
The fifth-year students, enrolled in a six-year pharmacy degree program, also covered mental health care, nutrition and food services, the Community Living Center, and medication reconciliation for inpatient and outpatient care. Students described the experience as meaningful, highlighting the respect shown for patients’ lives and dignity and the distinctive care provided to military Veterans. The student’s own comments confirm VA’s unique and special care for America’s military Veterans, “It was a very meaningful tour. I not only gained pharmacy knowledge, but I also felt the warmth of healthcare that truly respects each patient’s life and dignity.” Another exchange student wrote, “I learned for the first time that there is a mental disease caused by the guilt of having survived at war… and how mental health treatment includes counseling and medication. The tour was interesting because the hospital was for Veterans, unlike hospitals in Japan.”
