There is a stubborn myth in traditional education that every student must learn at the exact same pace, on the exact same rigid daily schedule. But we all know that life doesn't actually work that way.

When a student’s life circumstances shift, (whether they're balancing a job, navigating a difficult season, or trying to recover credits from a rough semester), the standard 8-to-3 bell schedule can suddenly feel like an impossible obstacle. Too often, the educational system tells our young people they're "falling behind."

We created the Innovation Flex Academy to completely flip that narrative. Instead of forcing a student to conform to a system that no longer fits their reality, we hand them the controls.

Flex Academy is built on the belief that autonomy is incredibly powerful. Through our specialized curriculum, students can focus intensely and complete courses in a four-to-six-week window. They decide whether a morning or afternoon on-campus session works best for their life.

But independence at Innovation High School never means isolation. While our teenagers are managing their own time, they are working face-to-face with a dedicated Teacher Mentor whose sole job is to keep them supported, accountable, and completely connected to our community.

Flex Academy isn’t just about making up credits. It's about teaching a student how to advocate for their own needs, manage their time, and take absolute ownership of their future.

It's one thing for a teacher to tell a student that their voice matters. It's an entirely different experience when their city shows up to prove it.

We love how our Fashion Director, Ronnie Ryno highlights the incredible power of the Spokane community and their unwavering willingness to show up for our students. But why is this external support so vital to a teenager’s education?

Because youth are incredibly perceptive. They know when they're being siloed away from the real world. When local leaders, creatives, and neighbors actively step into our school, (or invite our students out into their spaces), the walls of the classroom completely disappear.

This level of community involvement sends a profound, undeniable message to our youth: your ideas have value, you belong in this city, and your future is absolutely worth our investment. It bridges the gap between learning a concept in a classroom and seeing how it actually impacts the real world.

Education cannot happen in a vacuum. It requires a dedicated network of people who are willing to mentor, listen, and show up. We are so incredibly grateful to Ronnie for beautifully capturing this connection, and to the people of Spokane for constantly reminding our youth that they have an entire city standing firmly behind them.

The role of a Superintendent is too often viewed from a distance...a figurehead making administrative decisions from an office. But at Innovation High School, we know that transformative educational leadership must be built on the ground, face-to-face with the people it impacts the most.

We are incredibly proud to have Terry Jess leading our community. His role matters profoundly because a school leader doesn't just manage policies or schedules; they set the cultural heartbeat for the entire building. When a leader actively prioritizes equity, genuine empathy, and radical inclusion, that exact energy flows directly into every single classroom.

Terry’s commitment to our youth is shifting the way we approach education in Spokane. He fundamentally understands that our responsibility extends far beyond simply getting young people to cross a graduation stage. We're actively shaping the next generation of our city's citizens. By fostering an environment where teachers feel fiercely supported, our educators can, in turn, provide the exact emotional and academic support our students need to thrive.

When leadership is rooted in deep human connection, a high school stops being just an institution and becomes a true community hub. Under Terry's guidance, we aren't just teaching classes, we're building a foundation where our youth can develop into compassionate, informed, and powerful leaders in their own right.

We are so grateful for his vision and his unwavering dedication to our students.
Thanks for believing in us, Terry.

Memorizing the branches of government from a dry textbook rarely inspires our youth to become active citizens.

At Innovation High School, we believe that if you want young people to truly understand American political systems, we have to put the system directly into their hands. Enter Delegate Dash. is a dynamic, hands-on board game utilized in our classrooms to bring civics and history completely to life through project-based learning.

But why is it so important for our students to deeply understand how these political structures work? Because we cannot change a system that we don't understand.

We want our students to know exactly how policies are made, how resources are distributed, and how their own voices can actively shape the future of their communities. By learning these mechanics through strategy, collaboration, and interactive gameplay, they aren't just memorizing facts to pass a test. They're building the critical thinking and debate skills required to passionately advocate for justice and equity in the real world.

When we empower our youth with a deep, practical understanding of how our government actually functions, we aren't just teaching history. We're giving them the exact tools they need to become the informed, powerful leaders our society desperately needs.

The transition from middle school to high school is one of the most vulnerable moments in a teenager’s life. Suddenly, the expectations are higher, the social dynamics are entirely different, and the pressure to succeed feels immense.

In a traditional, overcrowded system, freshmen are often dropped into this massive new environment and simply expected to figure it out alone. If they stumble, it's incredibly easy for them to quietly slip through the cracks.

At Innovation High School, we fundamentally believe that no student should have to navigate their first year in isolation.

Our 9th Grade Success program is entirely unique because we do not wait for a student to fail before we offer help. Instead, we build a proactive, wraparound support system from day one. Our educators actively collaborate behind the scenes, sharing insights daily to ensure that no single youth is ever overlooked. We focus just as heavily on their emotional well-being and peer connections as we do on their grades.

Why does this matter? Because when a freshman feels truly seen and supported by healthy, respectful relationships with their teachers, the fear disappears. They stop worrying about whether they belong, and they start discovering who they want to become.

By prioritizing profound human connection during this critical first year, we give our youth the exact foundation they need to thrive for the next four.

For some students, a traditional high school schedule simply doesn't work.

Whether they're facing barriers to full-time attendance, dealing with transfer issues, or trying to recover from past academic struggles, the standard system can quickly make them feel left behind. When a student falls behind on credits, the traditional response is often isolation, sending them away to a separate, disconnected building. We believe that is the exact moment a teenager needs their community the most.

This is what makes the Innovation Flex Academy fundamentally different. It's a non-traditional learning program located directly within Innovation High School. We refuse to separate our students from their peers. In fact, youth in the Flex program can still choose to attend standard IHS classes alongside their daily coursework. The impact of this approach is profound because it's built entirely on flexibility and human connection.

Instead of a rigid timetable, teenagers choose morning or afternoon sessions that fit their actual lives. They sit down with a dedicated Teacher Mentor to create a personalized Graduation Plan. By utilizing our online provider, Graduation Alliance, they have the opportunity to complete courses in an accelerated four to six weeks. We aren't just helping students check off boxes for a diploma. Our vision is to empower students to take ownership of their education in a supportive environment that fosters true growth and deep connection. When a community shows a young person that there are multiple paths to success, and that we will support them on whichever one they need to take, it changes the trajectory of their entire life.

High school shouldn't be something that young people need to survive. It should be a place where they are truly known, valued, and empowered to build their own future.

At Innovation High School, we believe that profound education starts entirely with genuine human connection. Before a student can excel academically, they need to know they belong to a community that genuinely cares about them. We prioritize building an environment rooted in strong peer support and mutual respect, where our teachers don't just hand out assignments. They actively listen, mentor, and stand beside our youth every step of the way.

Because every student learns differently, we have completely reimagined what the high school experience can look like to meet teenagers exactly where they are:

• 9th Grade Success: We remove the fear of the freshman transition by providing a dedicated, proactive support system so no student ever falls behind.
• Flex Academy: For youth who need a non-traditional approach, we offer highly personalized, adaptable schedules and credit recovery while keeping them completely integrated in our campus community.
• Creative Arts: We give students the space and the tools to discover their unique voices through hands-on, project-based creative pathways.

We build the school around the student, not the other way around. When a teenager feels seen, heard, and supported by their community, there is absolutely no limit to what they can achieve.

If you are looking for an educational environment where your student will be treated as an equal partner in their learning, there is a place for them here. Enrollment for the upcoming school year is officially open.

Learning about business out of a textbook only takes a student so far. True entrepreneurship requires stepping out of the classroom and engaging directly with the community.

Recently, our students had the incredible opportunity to do exactly that by running their own booth at The Wavy Bunch Night Market and Street Fair. By participating in this vibrant local event, our young people weren't just studying customer service, communication, and project management, they were actively living it. In these spaces, they pitch their ideas, manage their inventory, and build genuine connections with the people of Spokane.

We want to send a massive thank you to the good folks at THE WAVY BUNCH and Spokane NIGHT MARKET & Street Fair for creating inclusive, dynamic spaces where local culture thrives. This is exactly what makes this city so special. When community organizers open their doors and give our youth a platform to test their skills in the real world, everyone grows stronger.

Thank you for supporting our students and showing them that their ventures have a real place in our local economy!

Be sure to head over to their pages and take part in "Monster Mash" this Oct. 9th!

How do you get students to truly care about their own future? You start by treating them like real people today.

Science teacher Jesse K has been a cornerstone of our community for four years. After spending three impactful years in our middle school, he transitioned to our high school, bringing with him a profound ability to connect with our youth.

For Jesse, a classroom must be a completely safe space rooted in mutual care. He knows that being an effective educator doesn't require acting superior to the people you are teaching. Instead, he focuses on building a foundation of deep, genuine respect. He talks with our students, not at them.

But make no mistake, that safe space comes with incredibly high expectations. Because Jesse deeply cares about where our students are going in life, he firmly holds them accountable to finish their work and push their intellectual limits. He proves every single day that you can hold a young person to a rigorous academic standard while still treating them with absolute empathy.

When a student knows their teacher respects them as a human being, they stop fighting the curriculum and start rising to the challenge. Thank you, Jesse, for showing our youth that true leadership leaves the ego at the door.
