DISSECTION DAY: “These are my favorite days of the whole program.”

Recently in their Biochemistry through Anatomy class, eighth grade science students in North Central High School’s Institute of Science and Technology middle school immersion program (M-IST) snapped on their gloves to prepare for their first animal dissection of the year.

Science teacher Andy Munsey shares how a lesson in crayfish dissection is preparing students to study more complex systems of living organisms later this year.

“Whether they're excited, whether they're scared, dissection days bring out emotion and interest and passion in kids. And that's what we want. We want kids to feel things and have experiences, and these are the experiences that they're going to remember.”

M-IST 6-8 grade students attend school full time on North Central’s campus, engaging in accelerated English Language Arts, Math, and Social Studies courses, as well as advanced Science courses that utilize the school’s specialized science laboratories and equipment. LEVY LEARNING: On Nov. 3, 2026, voters within Spokane Public Schools boundaries will consider a three-year replacement Educational Programs and Operations levy.

CALENDAR REMINDER: there is no school Oct. 19-23, 2026, as part of our new academic calendar for the 2026-27 school year.

An academic calendar reorganizes the traditional school year to include shorter, more frequent breaks instead of a long summer break. These breaks, called intersessions, allow for opportunities to refresh and recharge while reducing the "summer slide" in learning retention. Learn more at spokaneschools.org/calendar.

We hope that students and staff enjoy the break and return on Oct. 26 ready to learn!

Families looking for ideas to keep kids engaged during the break can check out spokaneschools.org/fallbreak for activities offered by the district and community partners.

INDIGENOUS PEOPLES’ DAY: Since 2016, the City of Spokane has recognized the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples' Day, which celebrates and honors the traditions and cultures of the Indigenous people of the United States.

LUNCH IS SERVED: It’s National School Lunch Week! Since 1962, this annual observance has promoted the importance of a healthy school lunch in a child’s life and the impact it has both in and out of the classroom.

We’re grateful for Nutrition Services staff like Peperzak Middle School's Joe Chatterton, who prepares delicious meals that fuel student learning!

All students eat free through our participation in the Community Eligibility Provision. Learn more at spokaneschools.org/meals.

TEACHERS TOGETHER: On Friday, our teachers participated in a day of professional learning and training across the district.

In the morning at Lewis and Clark High School, K-12 Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) teachers gathered in the auditorium to hear updates on upcoming learning opportunities for students to engage in theatre, art creation, and live music with community partners like The Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture, Spokane Symphony, and Spokane Civic Theatre.

VPA coordinator Greg Pschirrer also led interactive icebreaker games like Common Ground and Splat to help teachers working in the same feeder pattern get to know one another – it’s a great classroom activity for students too!

This was only a small part of one example of professional development and collaboration taking place across our 58 buildings on Friday. We’re excited to follow teachers on their journey as they share what they learned with students throughout the year!

LEVY AT WORK: “I love that music is a place where kids who are not always successful in other areas find their bright moments, find their success.”

Lincoln Heights Elementary music teacher Kaitlin Webster uses drums and xylophones to help second grade students learn to keep the beat as they make music. When they walk out of her classroom, they’re equipped with more than the ability to stay on rhythm.

“I think it's also such a great place for learning what I think are integral skills like critical thinking, how to be in a group, how to interact with people, reinforcing a lot of the things that they're learning in their classes, just in a different way.”

Elementary specialists teach music, art, science, and P.E. to K-5 students. These positions are supported in part by the local Educational Programs and Operations levy, which helps to fund academic programs, services, and student activities and athletics that are not funded by the state. The local levy makes up about 15% of Spokane Public Schools' annual operating budget. A replacement levy will be presented to voters on the Nov. 3, 2026, ballot.
