Beginning tomorrow, October 16, the City of Spokane will lift seasonal fire restrictions, allowing recreational fires to resume under normal fire safety regulations.

As cooler temperatures arrive, we remind residents that recreational fires still require responsible practices to prevent injuries and unintended fires.

• Use only clean, dry firewood or manufactured logs.
• Keep recreational fires at least 25 feet from structures and combustible materials.
• Keep fires small, no larger than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height.
• Always have a garden hose or fire extinguisher nearby.
• Never leave a recreational fire unattended.
• Completely extinguish fires before leaving. No smoke should remain.
• Never burn garbage, yard waste, or construction materials.
• Burn barrels are not permitted.

Although seasonal restrictions are being lifted, additional restrictions may be implemented when weather conditions increase fire danger.

For current burning regulations and restrictions, visit SpokaneCleanAir.org.

Enjoy the cooler weather, stay safe, and remember to always Be Fire Smart!

Fire investigators have determined the fire at the Tiki Lodge on Second Ave. was electrical, originating near a mattress. The smoke alarm in the unit had been disabled prior to the fire, which likely contributed to the fatality. Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by this loss.

Please join us in congratulating the Spokane Fire Department Engine 1 crew, recently recognized with a Special Unit Citation for their actions during a residential fire last year.

On August 25, 2025, Engine 1 arrived within four minutes of the initial 911 call and encountered a rapidly developing fire with a person trapped inside the home.

Despite challenging conditions, the Engine 1 crew quickly initiated a fire attack to support the rescue of an unconscious victim. Their rapid decision-making, coordination, and performance under extreme pressure were exceptional and exemplified the teamwork expected during critical incidents.

The Special Unit Citation honors Engine 1 for their teamwork, decisive action, and coordinated ex*****on during the rescue. Confronted with a rapidly evolving emergency, the crew relied on their training and each other to give the victim the best possible chance of survival.

Recognized for their actions were Lt. Devin Haefer, FEO Curtis Smith, and FF Jason McKenzie. Not pictured in the group photo was FEO Smith, who was deployed on military duties.

Congratulations to these firefighters on this well-deserved recognition and for exemplifying the commitment to service expected of Spokane Fire Department personnel.

SFD's Engine 3 started the week strong with a stop by the YMCA to meet with 75 preschoolers. We loved talking about fire safety, meeting our little firefighters, and sharing some smiles along the way.

🔥 Fire Prevention Week 🔥

For more than 100 years, Fire Prevention Week has helped communities learn how to prevent fires and stay safe. It is observed each year around October 9 in remembrance of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 people homeless, and destroyed more than 17,000 structures.

This year’s theme highlights safe charging. 🔋 Learn how to safely charge and use your devices to help prevent fires.

đźš’ Spokane Fire Department is proud to provide fire safety education and help keep our community safe.

Learn. Prepare. Prevent. Protect.

From hydrant to full flow. Our crews spent the day on pump operations, because knowing your equipment before the call is what makes the call go right.
