π¨ PUBLIC SAFETY NOTICE: INCREASE IN SCAM PHONE CALLS π¨
The City of Spooner Police Department is alerting the public to an increase in scam phone calls targeting members of our community. Scammers may impersonate law enforcement officers, government agencies, banks, or other trusted organizations in an attempt to obtain personal information or steal money. These callers may use fear, threats, or a sense of urgency to pressure victims into acting quickly. Please remember the following tips to protect yourself:
βοΈ Verify the caller. Scammers can manipulate caller ID to make a call appear legitimate. Do not trust a phone number simply because it looks familiar.
π« Never send money. Legitimate law enforcement agencies will not demand payment over the phone to avoid arrest, resolve a warrant, or settle an investigation.
π Protect your information. Never provide passwords, Social Security numbers, banking information, or verification codes to an unsolicited caller.
βΈοΈ Hang up and verify. If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and contact the organization directly using an official, independently verified phone number.
π¨βπ©βπ§βπ¦ Spread the word. Please share this warning with family members, friends, and neighbors, especially older adults who may be targeted by these scams.
Remember: If something feels suspicious, trust your instincts. Take a moment to verify before taking action.
If you have already provided financial information or sent money, contact your financial institution immediately. Your safety and security are important to us.
Thank you for helping us keep our community informed and safe.
