The Insect Epiphany: How Our Six-Legged Allies Shape Human Culture

SATURDAY! October 17, 1:00 p.m.
Spring Green Community Library,
230 E Monroe Street

Barrett Klein, UW–La Crosse professor and author of The Insect Epiphany (Winner of Wisconsin Library Association 2025 Outstanding Achievement Award – Honored Nonfiction Title), will share his knowledge and passion with us at this event.

Insects surround us. They fuel life on Earth through their roles as pollinators, predators, and prey, but rarely do we consider the outsized influence they have had on our culture and civilization. Their anatomy and habits inform how we live, work, create art, and innovate —from ancient etchings to avant-garde art, from bug-based meals to haute couture—The Insect Epiphany proves that our world would look very different without insects, not just because they are crucial to our ecosystems, but because they have shaped and inspired so many aspects of what makes us human. This event is free and unticketed. Dessert and conversation to follow the presentation.

Preservation on Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin Estate ~ October 19 - 7 PM

Work on the buildings at Taliesin never seems to end. Does anything ever get any better over there and is there an end date for the work? Taliesin historian Keiran Murphy will give a presentation on the underlying guidelines for repair and restoration work on the National Historic Landmark buildings, with details on recent large projects – like HVAC at Taliesin and the work at the Hillside Theater – and current plans for the future projects.

It will be a 45-minutes with 15 min. for questions.

Presenter Information: Keiran Murphy has worked with Taliesin for 30 years, publishing articles and consulting with authors on Wright and his home. She assisted Paul Hendrickson with Plagued by Fire, and Ron McCrea with Building Taliesin. In September 2024 she was a recipient of a “Wright Spirit Award” from the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy.

Enjoy Kathy Steffen’s Assemblage Art in the Glass Case Gallery throughout the month of October.

She talks about her work: “Assemblage (AH-sem-blah-jjj) Art brings found and discarded objects together to create new one-of-a-kind three-dimensional art. Began by Pablo Picasso in 1912, assemblage has a rich history with many different approaches. It especially appeals to me as it finds a new life for items instead of adding to landfill. My own method includes adding clay sculptural elements to the construction and then finishing with painting that brings the piece to life.
“Since retiring from teaching and writing, I spend many hours in “the lab” (the basement of my Spring Green home converted into an art studio) which I refer to as my happy place. Taking online and in-person art classes keeps my creative soul alive and gives me new inspiration and approaches to such a versatile art form. There are no limits to assemblage, which I find liberating (and a little scary) all at the same time.”

Kathy’s Assemblage Art is available for viewing during regular library hours.
