DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR'S ARTICLE | October 16, 2026
Every day counts–regular school attendance is one of the most important factors in student success. From the earliest years of education, attending school consistently helps students develop the reading, writing, and academic skills they need to succeed. And research has shown that students who are not reading at grade level by the end of third grade face greater challenges later in their education, including a lower likelihood of graduating from high school.
In the 25-26 school year, more than 16% of River Valley students were chronically absent from school. So, for a district of approximately 1,000 students, 16% chronic absenteeism (which is more than 10 days for an individual) equates to 1,600 days of missed opportunity!
The district is very lenient with families when sickness or family emergencies arise, but we also know that every day in the classroom provides valuable opportunities to learn, ask questions, receive feedback, and build a strong academic foundation.
And school is about much more than academics. Daily attendance allows students to build lasting friendships, develop social skills, participate in exciting field trips, and explore interests through activities, performances, and hands-on learning experiences. Students also develop important life skills, including responsibility, punctuality, time management, and perseverance. These are many of the same skills our local businesses expect in an effective workplace.
These habits help build confidence, strengthen relationships, and prepare students for future success in college, careers, and their communities. When students face academic challenges, being at school is especially important because teachers and staff are there to provide support and help them work through difficulties.
The benefits of regular attendance extend well beyond graduation. Students who attend school consistently tend to earn stronger grades, perform better on assessments, and have more opportunities to pursue scholarships, college, and career pathways. At River Valley School District, our strategic plan reinforces that students are our number one priority! Every day in school is an opportunity for growth, connection, and achievement. But families, students, and schools each play an important role in making attendance a priority–every day counts.
Sincerely,
Loren Glasbrenner, District Administrator
