SHFD recently completed the second year of cancer screenings with United Diagnostic Services. Firefighters are more susceptible to cancers due to the amount of carcinogens they may be exposed to on a daily basis. Assessments like this have been found to identify cancers early allowing for rapid treatment and positive recoveries.

The department takes great strides to protect the health and well-being of staff through annual physicals, two sets of turnout gear, gear extractors to clean personal protective equipment, and these types of advanced ultrasound assessments on all major body organs and vessels.

We appreciate UDS for their services and the level of care they provide our staff.

Employee Spotlight: Firefighter Logan Purcell

It’s been a little while since we’ve shared an employee spotlight! We’ve been busy, but we have a few newer faces who deserve an introduction. First up is Firefighter Logan Purcell!

Logan joined the department on March 30, 2026, and is assigned to Engine 62A. Before joining the fire service, Logan served our country for six years in the United States Marine Corps. After leaving the military, he wanted a career that would still offer excitement, challenges, and a sense of purpose. The fire service was a perfect fit!

Outside of work, Logan enjoys deer and squirrel hunting, working on small engines and vehicles, and spending time with his kids. He also wants to give a special shout-out to his wife, Davina! His favorite food is freshly baked hot fudge brownies with chocolate chunks, vanilla ice cream, and brownie dough chunks. That’s a serious dessert commitment!

Over the next year, Logan plans to work toward certifications in SCBA Using It, Firefighter Survival, and Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) operations. Something his coworkers might not know about him? He served as a marksmanship coach in the Marine Corps!

We’re glad to have Logan on the team and look forward to watching him grow in the fire service. Thanks for your service to our country and your commitment to serving our community!

This week’s in-service training focused on low-, mid-, and high-rise buildings, instructed by Captain Kyle Watson. The training gave our personnel valuable hands-on experience and an opportunity to work through the challenges of operating in multi-story buildings.

A big thank you to the Tru Hotel for allowing us to use their building for this training. At five stories, the Tru Hotel is the tallest building in Spring Hill, making it a great location for our personnel to train and prepare for the calls we may face.

October is Fire Prevention Month! 🚨 Do you know what your smoke alarm is telling you?

Learning the sounds of fire safety can save lives.
🔋 A “chirp” means it’s time to change your battery.
🚨 A “beep” means smoke or fire—get out and stay out!
💨 If you see smoke, act fast and follow your escape plan.

Take a moment this month to test your alarms, talk with your family about what each sound means, and make sure everyone knows how to respond.

Smoke alarms save lives—let’s keep Spring Hill safe together!

As the weather cools down, many of us enjoy gathering around chimineas and fire pits. Before you light that first fire, take a moment to review these important safety tips from the Spring Hill Fire Department:

🔥 Place your fire pit or chiminea at least 10 feet from your home, deck, or anything flammable.
🔥 Use only dry, seasoned hardwood—never gasoline or other accelerants.
🔥 Check the weather—avoid burning on windy or dry days.
🔥 Always use a spark screen and keep a fire extinguisher or water source nearby.
🔥 Never leave children or pets unattended near a fire.
🔥 Remember: Open burning is not allowed within city limits. Know and follow all local regulations.

Safe fires build memories—unsafe fires put lives at risk. Let’s work together to keep our community safe and warm this season!

Fire safety is everyone’s responsibility. Prevent. Protect. Save lives.
