A lot of regional planning starts with moments like this. Long before a project gets funded or a plan gets approved, it starts with a map, a conversation, and a team working through what the region actually needs.

That's the part most people never see. NWARPC staff spend hours studying routes, data, and connections across Northwest Arkansas, work that eventually turns into the projects, plans, and funding decisions you see on this page.

It's not flashy, but it's where the groundwork gets laid.

This is what regional planning looks like, one map at a time.

40 miles. 7 cities. One trail that connects all of Northwest Arkansas.

From Fayetteville to Bella Vista, the Razorback Greenway links our parks, neighborhoods, schools, and downtowns into one continuous path. It's how we get outside, spend time with the people we love, and experience the region as one connected community.

And it pays off. A 2022 study found biking generated $159 million in economic impact for Northwest Arkansas, including $100 million from biking-related businesses and $59 million in avoided health care costs. Trails like the Greenway aren't just nice to have. They keep people healthy and support local business.

Not every plan is about roads. The Northwest Arkansas Open Space Plan looks at parks, trails, and natural areas across the region, helping guide communities in their work to protect Open Space and conserve farmland as Northwest Arkansas continues to grow.

As leaves change and outdoor season peaks, it's a good reminder that planning for green space is just as important as planning for growth.

Meet Nicole Gibbs, AICP, our Assistant Director and Transportation Programs Manager. Nicole also serves as our Title VI Coordinator, making sure NWARPC's planning process is fair and accessible for everyone in the region.

From federal compliance to day to day program management, Nicole keeps a lot of moving pieces on track so the region's transportation plans actually move forward.

Here's a number worth sitting with. Northwest Arkansas is projected to grow from about 600,000 people today to more than 1 million by 2050.

That's not a distant hypothetical, it's the reality NWARPC plans around every day. More people means more demand on roads, trails, transit, and the infrastructure already stretched thin in fast-growing spots.

That's exactly why Forward2050, our regional long range plan, looks decades ahead instead of reacting after the fact. Roads, trails, transit, and land use all tie back to this one plan, built around where the region is actually headed.

Growth is coming either way. Planning for it is the difference between a region that keeps working and one that doesn't.

Maple Street just got a whole lot safer to walk and bike.

Congratulations to the City of Fayetteville and the University of Arkansas on Friday’s ribbon cutting for the completed Maple Street Improvements Project, a complete re-design of the half mile corridor between Garland Avenue and the Razorback Regional Greenway.

Funded in part by a $7.5 million U.S. Department of Transportation 2023 Safe Streets and Roads for All grant, this transformed corridor now features a protected two-way bike path, improved pedestrian crossings, new landscaping, and drainage upgrades, making it safer and easier to get around for the thousands of students, faculty, staff, and visitors who use Maple Street every day, no matter how they travel.

Maple Street was identified as a priority corridor in the NWA Regional Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan, and it’s exciting to see another piece of that regional vision come to life in such a stunning way!

NWARPC's work shows up in more places than you might think.

Regional planning isn't just plans on paper. It's the historic routes you can follow by bike, on foot, or by car, streets designed so people can get around safely however they choose to travel, and a study that brought four cities together to protect the groundwater beneath us.

Swipe through a few examples and tell us which one surprised you.
