βš–οΈ WHAT SPLOST WOULD FUND NEXT: MAGISTRATE COURT AND SHERIFF’S TRAINING CENTER

If the next SPLOST is approved by voters, funding will support a new facility at the Effingham County Sheriff's Office for the Magistrate Court. The building will also include a Public Safety Training Center.

Magistrate Court provides residents with a fair and efficient forum for handling a wide range of civil and criminal matters. Updated court facilities would provide more functional space for court operations, staff, and the residents who rely on these services. Additionally, locating Magistrate Court near the Sheriff’s Office and jail would provide greater convenience and support more efficient coordination among court personnel, law enforcement, and detention operations.

The training center would give the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office additional space to conduct ongoing instruction, strengthen preparedness, and help deputies maintain the skills needed to serve the community safely and effectively. It would also serve as a regional resource. Law enforcement personnel from Effingham County and surrounding municipalities and counties could gather there for training, professional development, and collaborative learning opportunities.

Together, this facility would strengthen the County’s justice and public-safety operations while helping local and regional agencies prepare to serve their communities safely and effectively.

Effingham County is pleased to announce a $2 million grant from OpenAI to support the development of a trail system at Atlas Park, a major recreational destination currently being developed.

OpenAI Chief Financial Officer Sarah Friar joined Effingham County officials at Atlas Park on Thursday to commemorate the grant and recognize the partnership between OpenAI and Effingham County. The funding, provided through OpenAI's $80 million community investment fund, will help kickstart the park's trail system as part of Phase 1 improvements associated with the County's SPLOST 2022 program.

OpenAI's decision to support the project was informed by the results of a public opinion survey, which provided insight into the community's priorities and interests. The grant reflects the company's commitment to directing its community investments toward projects that align with the needs and desires of local residents.

Located near Highway 80 and Sand Hill Road, Atlas Park will transform a former sand mining property into a premier destination for outdoor recreation, entertainment, and community gathering. Centered around an approximately 138-acre lake, the park's long-term master plan includes an extensive trail system, pickleball courts, basketball and volleyball courts, an outdoor arena, event venues, a swimming beach, camping areas, fishing and boating opportunities, and access to the Ogeechee River, among many other recreational amenities.
Once developed, Atlas Park is envisioned as a destination offering something for residents and visitors of all ages and interests.

"This is an incredible investment in the future of Effingham County and, more importantly, in the quality of life of our residents," said County Manager Tim Callanan. "Atlas Park represents one of the most exciting recreational opportunities our County has undertaken. OpenAI's commitment allows us to accelerate a key component of this project and demonstrates how private investment can deliver meaningful, lasting benefits to the community. We are grateful to OpenAI for recognizing the importance of investing in the community they are becoming a part of."

β€œWe want our investments in Effingham County to reflect what matters to the people who live here.” Said Katie Comer, Community Engagement Representative for OpenAI. β€œThis $2 million grant will help create trails where families can walk, bike and spend time together. We’re proud to support the county’s work to make Atlas Park a place the whole community
can enjoy.”

The trail system will serve as an important component of Atlas Park, connecting recreational amenities and providing opportunities for residents and visitors to walk, bike, exercise, and experience the property's natural surroundings. The $2 million grant will help advance this portion of the park's development while complementing the County's existing SPLOST-funded investments.

The announcement reflects OpenAI's broader commitment to supporting Effingham County through community investments that create long-term opportunities and benefits for local residents.

As planning and development progress, Effingham County will provide additional updates regarding the trail system, construction milestones, and future recreational amenities at Atlas Park.

We love seeing a valued employee shine!

Human Resources Office Assistant Cole Reavis is sporting a brand new pair of our Effingham County sunglasses. Cole specifically asked for a pair, and since these glasses are a favorite giveaway at Effingham County events, we were thrilled to make it happen. He said his old sunglasses were broken

Cole is a career seeker through the Supported Employment Program at B&B Care Inc. of Springfield, which connects individuals with disabilities to meaningful jobs that match their strengths and talents. We’re grateful for our partnership with B&B and proud to support Cole on his employment journey.

Keep shining, Cole β€” the future looks bright! β˜€οΈπŸ•ΆοΈ

πŸ€ WHAT SPLOST WOULD FUND NEXT: HIGHWAY 119 GYM AND ACCESSIBLE PLAYGROUND

If the next SPLOST is approved by voters, funding will support exterior improvements to the Highway 119 gymnasium and the addition of a fully accessible playground.

The exterior makeover would refresh the appearance of the gym and help it better complement the surrounding Highway 119 campus.

The new playground would be designed to give children of all abilities a welcoming and accessible place to play, explore and connect.

Together, these improvements will create a more inviting, inclusive, and connected campus for Effingham County residents.
