Today's announcement gives us clarity on the future home of the new Hampden County Courthouse.
Throughout this process, many advocated for a new courthouse, to keep the courthouse in Springfield, and I strongly supported keeping this important institution in our downtown. A downtown courthouse continues to strengthen the heart of our city while creating opportunities for future growth.
While I know a local developer was not selected, I appreciate their continued commitment to investing in Springfield. I hope they will continue pursuing development projects on their sites that move our city forward. There is room to think bigger than just state and federal projects.
I did not advocate for any sight, the selection of the Liberty Junction site presents an interesting opportunity to spark economic development on the north side of downtown, complementing the significant investments on the opposite end of downtown. It would be great to see new housing, particularly transit-oriented development around union station, and other investments to reimagine the north.
As this project moves ahead, I will advocate that this project prioritizes hiring Springfield residents, utilizing local contractors, and creating meaningful opportunities for our local businesses to be part of this $600 million project. I will also continue to advocate that the current courthouse site be leveled and cleared, so the city is not left with a "sick" building.
Most importantly, the staff and public get a newer Courthouse.
Officials for the state Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance made the long-awaited announcement Thursday that it had selected the developer for the $600 million project to give Hampden Superior, Springfield District, Western Housing and Springfield Juvenile courts a new home.
