💙 Did you know that it is Juvenile Justice Month? 💙

October is Juvenile Justice Month, and we at Robertson County Juvenile Court want to take this opportunity to raise awareness about the important work being done to support children, families, and our community.

This year’s theme, “Building a Future Where Youth Thrive,” focuses on the importance of mentorship, mental health, meeting basic needs, and building strong, supportive communities.

Juvenile justice is about more than consequences. It is about accountability, intervention, rehabilitation, and second chances; helping young people overcome challenges, make positive choices, and build a successful future.

It takes all of us; families, schools, law enforcement, court professionals, service providers, volunteers, and community partners to help our youth thrive.

This month, we recognize and thank everyone who invests in the lives of our young people and works to build a stronger future for our community.

Together, we can help our youth thrive.

On May 21, Magistrate Melanie Stark had the privilege of swearing in a new group of CASA volunteers (Court Appointed Special Advocate or also referred to as "Caring Adults Serving as Angels"). This ceremony serves as an important reminder of the vital role these dedicated advocates play in our juvenile court system and in the lives of abused and neglected children.

CASA advocates are specially trained volunteers who serve as the eyes and ears of the court. They get to know the child and provide independent recommendations focused solely on the child's best interests. Their commitment helps ensure that every child has a voice during what is often one of the most difficult periods of their life.

For the court, CASA advocates provide valuable information that assists in making informed decisions regarding safety, permanency, and well-being. Their involvement often helps the court gain a more complete understanding of a child's needs, strengths, and circumstances. Most importantly, CASA advocates offer consistency and support to children who may be experiencing uncertainty, instability, and trauma.

Every child deserves to be seen, heard, and valued. CASA volunteers help make that possible by standing beside children and advocating for their future. Robertson County Juvenile Court is grateful for their willingness to serve and for the difference they make in the lives of vulnerable children and families throughout our community.

Congratulations to our newest CASA advocates, and THANK YOU for answering the call to serve. Your dedication will have a lasting impact on the children who need it most.

It happened again! We have Safe Baby Court graduates! We are incredibly proud of the parents who reached this achievement and grateful to the service providers, attorneys, DCS staff, CASA volunteers, and court team members who work together to support these families every step of the way.
Safe Baby Court is an evidence based program funded by contract through the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse and the State of Tennessee. It built on the belief that addressing trauma, creating strong support systems, and early intervention can make a lasting difference in the lives of babies and families.

While this is the holiday season, a time when many families gather at home, there are children in DCS custody who cannot go home. Sometimes this is for reasons completely beyond their control. Sometimes it is connected to the actions or choices of adults, or even behaviors shaped by trauma. Regardless of the reason, the weight of it is carried by the child.

This season invites us to reflect on how we treat children when they struggle. Trauma can be mistaken as misbehavior. When we respond with trauma-informed and trauma-responsive practices, we reduce harm and create space for healing. When we invest in restorative justice, we focus on accountability paired with support, repair, and preventing future involvement rather than repeating cycles of removal.

Preventing removals means showing up earlier, listening better, and strengthening families before crisis hits. It truly takes a village; courts, agencies, schools, neighbors, and community members, working together with intention and compassion.

Below are a few poems by the voices and experiences of children who have been, or are, in DCS custody from Robertson County. Shared with care, to remind us who this system is meant to serve.
