‘BEDROCK OF READINESS’ RETIRES AFTER 32 YEARS OF FEDERAL CIVIL SERVICE

A cornerstone of the Illinois Army National Guard’s Schools Training Branch. A bedrock of readiness. The ultimate stabilizing force and a dedicated mentor within the operations, plans, and training directorate (G-3).

Those are just some of the words used to describe Nellie Sharp who retired Oct. 21 after 32 years of federal service in the Illinois Army National Guard, with 28 years spent in the ILARNG’s operations, plans, and training directorate.

Throughout Sharp’s 28 years in the G-3, she processed 56,000 school applications and training orders, a feat which has had generational impact on the Illinois Army National Guard Soldiers and their families.

“If you went to school, or did anything on behalf of our nation, the Illinois Army National Guard or the U.S. Army, Nellie sent you there,” said Brig. Gen. Lenny Williams, Assistant Adjutant General-Army and Commander of the Illinois Army National Guard, during a retirement ceremony at the Illinois Military Academy, Camp Lincoln, Springfield. “Her DNA is all over your career.”

Williams said Sharp had a way about her when correcting a Soldier and making the Soldier feel good about themselves.

“You know you were wrong, but the way she said it made you feel good about yourself,” Williams said. “I remember a young Lieutenant Williams getting squared away by Nellie back in the day.”

Williams said Sharp’s impact on Soldiers and their families can’t be summarized in any brief remarks.

“This is generational legacy,” he said. “You have impacted generations of leaders. You have made us better trainers, officers, noncommissioned officers, and warrant officers. That is just the G-3. Think about all the officers, noncommissioned officers, warrant officers and civilian employees who came through the G-3. She helped train them. It starts with Nellie. The bedrock and cornerstone.”

Williams said he couldn’t say enough about everything Sharp has done for the Illinois Army National Guard.

“You have impacted the entire organization for 32 years,” he said. “And the impact reaches past the Soldier to include families. You’ve impacted their career and that impacts their family.

“I know you have plans,” he said. “But we owe you a debt of gratitude.”

Col. Paul Metzdorff, Illinois Army National Guard Chief of Staff, said he remembers being a young lieutenant working in the G-3 as a project officer and being on the receiving end of Sharp’s assistance.

“Even then I knew people relied on you in the office and outside of that office,” he said.

Lt. Col. Nicholas Miller, Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations, Plans, and Training, said he hopes Sharp realizes the impact she had on Soldiers and their families.

“The first thing we do is generate readiness in our people,” he said. “I hope you know you did a great job and really helped Soldiers and their families. You put people first. Your dedication is without reproach.”

Sharp said she is looking forward to retirement.

“As I close this chapter of my career, thank you for the support, teamwork, and friendship over the years,” she said. “It really made a difference in my life.”

She offered advice to her younger colleagues.

“Keep pushing your boundaries,” she said. “Keep innovating and you’ll do great.”

Sharp began her civil service career in the early days of automated training management, and masterfully navigated multiple generations of complex military systems.

Sharp developed her own custom cost-training and waitlist tools, transforming raw data into actionable decisions that ensured Illinois consistently led the nation in quota ex*****on.

Sharp thanked the Illinois National Guard leadership.

“Thank you for your guidance and creating an environment where people can take risks, learn, and thrive,” she said.

She thanked her family, including husband, Tim, and son Mark for their support.

“Thank you for your patience, the late nights and early mornings,” she said. “I couldn’t have done it without your support.”

Sharp said she’s excited for the retirement chapter of her life.

“As I step into retirement, I’m excited for what comes next,” she said. “Unhurried mornings, new hobbies, and experiencing life at a slower pace. I will continue to cheer everyone on from the sidelines. Thank you for the memories, the lessons, and laughter. I will cherish them forever.”

128 Miles – 10 Soldiers – One Mission

Over the course of four days Oct. 6-9, about 10 Soldiers with the Illinois Army National Guard’s Company W of the Recruiting and Retention Battalion’s Recruit Sustainment Program, based in Marion, ran about 128 miles across southern Illinois with one mission in mind.

Their mission was to relay a replica of the Declaration of Independence across the River-to-River hiking and running trail, mostly through the Shawnee National Forest as part of the American Discovery Trail (ADT) 250 Relay. Each Soldier ran a leg of the day’s journey before passing off the baton with a replica of the Declaration of Independence safely tucked inside.

Starting at the Inspiration Point Trailhead in Wolf Lake, Illinois, the Soldiers used good old fashioned foot work to relay a replica of one of America’s founding documents across winding trails to High K**b Campground near Equality, Illinois, across the span of four days.

“When Jody Johnson, a trustee with the village of Goreville, learned the document would make its way through the Goreville area, he wanted to host a pep rally at the high school,” said Sgt. 1st Class Wes Chrisman, an Illinois Army National Guard recruiter based in Goreville.

Chrisman said Johnson told him the pep rally was dependent on one thing – the Illinois National Guard’s ability to run the Declaration of Independence about 30 miles – in just 7 hours.

“We said absolutely. That’s what we do – we rise up to the occasion to get things from Point A to Point B,” Chrisman said.

Chrisman, who lives in Goreville with his wife and two small children, worked with relay officials to get ILARNG volunteers to participate in the relay.

“Wes set all of this up,” said 1st Sgt. Beau Detrick. “We just made sure we were where he needed us to be as one of the legs of the journey.”

Detrick, who ran the first 15-mile leg on Oct. 7 from Makanda to the hand off point near the Panther Den point, said he prepared for the relay by increasing the distance he ran.

“I’d get up early on Sunday mornings and just head out to run,” he said. “Luckily this week the weather has cooperated with cooler temperatures and no rain.”

During the pep rally at Goreville High School, Chrisman reminded the students he always talks about challenging yourself.

“That’s what the Illinois National Guard does,” he said.

The Goreville Junior High Cross Country team took a page out of Chrisman’s playbook by challenging themselves after the pep rally. The team ran with Chrisman to finish out the last four miles of the Oct. 7 route to Ferne Clyffe State Park.

The ADT 250 Relay is a 6,800 mile, noncompetitive, coast to coast event organized by the American Discovery Trail Society to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States.

The route crosses 15 states, running from California to Delaware, including two routes through Illinois – a southern route which traversed through the Shawnee National Forest, and a northern route. The relay started July 1 at Point Reyes National Seashore and is scheduled to reach the Atlantic Ocean in Delaware on Nov. 26.

WHEATON, Ill. — Capt. Thaddaeus Carr was promoted to major during a ceremony on Oct 18 at Cantigny Park in Wheaton, Ill. recognizing his military service, professional development and contributions to military intelligence.
Carr enlisted in the Illinois Army National Guard in 2014 as a 92A automated logistical specialist before commissioning as a military intelligence officer through Officer Candidate School in 2017. Throughout his career, he has served in several leadership and staff positions, including human intelligence platoon leader, battalion intelligence officer, company commander and battalion executive officer.
“As I put on major, I’m thankful for everyone who has helped prepare me for the responsibility that comes with it,” Carr said. “I continue to learn, holding myself accountable, and giving our Soldiers the same kind of support so many of you have given me.”
Carr serves as the battalion officer in charge and operations officer with the 217th Military Intelligence Battalion, where he contributes to the development and operational readiness of the unit.
His military career is supported by an academic background in industrial management and data analytics. Carr earned a bachelor's degree in industrial management from Northern Illinois University in 2013, followed by two master's degrees: one in data analytics in 2022 and another in aviation management.
“There is no knowledge that is not power,” said Carr, quoting his favorite video game, Mortal Kombat. “In military intelligence, that idea has real meaning. What we learn can help a commander make a better decision, help a unit prepare and help protect our Soldiers.”
Carr's promotion marks another milestone in his military career, recognizing his years of service and experience in logistics and military intelligence. As a major, he will continue to apply his leadership and expertise in support of the Illinois Army National Guard's mission.
Carr was joined by family members and fellow Soldiers for the ceremony, marking the occasion with those who have supported him throughout his military career.
As he assumes the responsibilities of his new rank, Carr will continue to support the Army National Guard's mission through leadership, military intelligence operations and the development of Soldiers.
