Illinois Governor's Mansion Association Nestled between brick-paved streets and just blocks from the State Capitol, the Illinois Executive Mansion has been home to Illinois’ governors since 1855.

The Illinois Governor's Mansion Association is a private, non-profit organization (created in 1972) dedicated to preserving, furnishing, and overseeing the restoration of the Illinois Governor's Mansion in Springfield and the Hayes House in Du Quoin. It is the third-oldest continuously occupied governor’s mansion in the United States. The Illinois Executive Mansion Association is a non-profit board created in 1972 to preserve and oversee the restoration of the building. That mission has never been more urgent and important than it is today. The Illinois Executive Mansion Association is in the planning stages of a major restoration project to preserve the People’s House for future generations. It is impossible to count the number of historical events the mansion has witnessed since it was built in 1855, and it is critical the building be repaired so all Illinoisans have the chance to learn from it now and in the future.

There is something special on the mansion lawn! Through November 3rd, view the stunning art installation, Ways & Means, by Illinois artist Bob Faust. This Saturday trick-or-treaters will enjoy it up close and receive a sticker pack matching the art.

Each of the 12 flags carry a pair of tenets that reflect Faust's vision of a more inclusive American "we." Organized around the "ways" forward and the "means" by which to get there, the project is shaped by place and situation and as such, shapeshifts its form to meet them.

Special shout out to Bridget and Zac of Rz-1 Fine Art Solutions for working hard to install this week.

Ways & Means is supported by Good Chaos, Johalla Projects, and the Governor's Mansion Team.

Way back in the early 1900s, Halloween was a far cry from what we celebrate today. Harnessing the wibbly-wobbly kooky-spooky mystical power of spirits, people would take a stab at predicting their future relationships. It was more like a creepy Valentine’s Day, with witches and a bunch of weird apple stuff.

For Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we are highlighting a wonderfully done exhibit at our partner and neighbor, the Illinois State Museum. The museum is free, open daily, and has an incredible children’s area for play and education.

Before there was a United States of America, there was a kaleidoscope of Indigenous Nations and communities who called Turtle Island, or North America, home. This Land is Their Land: Stories of Indigenous Survivance shares the stories of Native American tribes forcibly removed from what is now the state of Illinois and how they maintain ties to their homelands today.

Head to the 2nd floor to follow one family’s 250-year journey from Illinois to Oklahoma and back again and learn how one Tribal Nation’s quest for justice led them to become the first federally recognized tribe in Illinois. The exhibit is open until April 2027.
