🚨 SCAM ALERT 🚨

The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about phone scammers impersonating law enforcement.

Our office has been made aware of two recent reports involving scammers claiming to be from the Sheriff’s Office and requesting money on behalf of individuals being held in custody.

**The Sheriff’s Office will never demand payment over the phone or request gift cards, phone cards, or personal financial information.**

If you receive a suspicious call like this, hang up and contact law enforcement directly. Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office: (217) 753-6666.

“We encourage residents to share this information with family members, friends, and especially elderly relatives, who are often targeted by these scams,” said Sangamon County Sheriff Paula Crouch.

On October 11, Sangamon County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a domestic disturbance that led to the recovery of 18 fi****ms, including two stolen fi****ms and two fully automatic guns, along with approximately 900 grams of suspected cannabis.

Larry Gillespie, 39, was arrested for domestic battery and has since been charged with felon in possession of a weapon.

The Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s assistance in locating Troy W. Rathbone, 46, of Riverton, who is wanted in connection with a July burglary at Mama Lee’s Sandbar.

Anyone with information regarding Rathbone’s whereabouts is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 217-788-8427 or the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office at 217-753-6666.

Today, members from the Sangamon County Sheriff's Office had the great honor of participating in the RUN FOR HONOR at Lincoln Park to support the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight.
We had deputies, correctional officers, civillian staff and their loved ones join our team today.
We even won a couple team awards! Special thanks to the organizers and all who came out to support.

Harvest season is underway across Sangamon County, and the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office and Sangamon County Farm Bureau are reminding motorists to use extra caution when sharing the road with farm equipment.

Drivers are encouraged to slow down, maintain a safe following distance and remain alert for slow-moving machinery entering or leaving fields. A little extra patience can help keep everyone safe during harvest season.

The Sangamon County Sheriff's Office has concluded its participation in the Labor Day traffic safety campaign.

Throughout the campaign, deputies conducted increased traffic enforcement focused on impaired and distracted driving, seat belt violations and other unsafe driving behaviors, resulting in 413 traffic stops and 342 citations or enforcement actions.

This week, Sheriff Paula Crouch swore in Correctional Officers Derek Scantlin and Brandon Gatewood as the newest members of the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office.

Scantlin and Gatewood officially began their service with the Sheriff’s Office following the ceremony. Please join us in congratulating them as they begin their careers with the Sheriff’s Office and take on the responsibility of serving and protecting the residents of Sangamon County.
