This is what Veterans Treatment Court is all about. 🇺🇸

Last Wednesday was a pretty incredible day.

I had the privilege of standing beside Chad, a United States Marine Veteran, as Judge Schmidt officially entered into the record that his charges were vacated following his successful completion of Sangamon County Veterans Treatment Court.

But simply saying Chad “completed the program” doesn’t adequately describe what he accomplished.

Before entering Veterans Court, Chad earned his Master of Arts in Management with a 4.00 GPA. He continued building on that success, earning a Certificate of Completion in Commercial Electrical Maintenance and a Certificate of Achievement in HVAC/R with High Honors.

And he did all of this while also doing the hard work Veterans Court requires—the appointments, accountability, multiple forms of therapy, showing up when it isn’t easy, and committing to making lasting changes.

As the Veterans Assistance Commission representative to Sangamon County Specialty Courts, I get the privilege of walking alongside our veteran participants throughout this process. I have personally gotten to know Chad, and I couldn’t be prouder of the man standing in this picture.

He didn’t just meet expectations.

He exceeded them.

And now his role isn’t ending with graduation. Chad serves as a mentor to future Veterans helping them to navigate a road he now knows firsthand.

That’s what makes this program so special. A Marine came into this program needing an opportunity—and he’s leaving it ready to become an opportunity for the next veteran.

Congratulations, Chad. You earned this. Semper Fi. 🇺🇸

And Judge Schmidt— thank you for believing in the mission of Veterans Treatment Court and in the veterans who stand before you.

Today, on National Women Veterans Day, I proudly stand alongside the millions of women who have answered the call to serve our nation.

As a woman veteran, I know firsthand that our service often comes with unique challenges, both during and after our military careers. Yet, women veterans continue to lead, inspire, advocate, and serve in their communities long after taking off the uniform.

I am honored to serve fellow veterans every day as a Veteran Service Officer, helping connect those who served with the benefits, resources, and support they have earned. It is a privilege to walk alongside veterans on their journeys and to be part of a community that refuses to leave anyone behind.

Today, we celebrate the trailblazers who came before us, the women currently serving, and the next generation of women who will continue to break barriers and make history.

To every woman veteran: Your service matters. Your sacrifice matters. Your story matters.

Thank you for your courage, your resilience, and your commitment to something greater than yourself.

Happy National Women Veterans Day.

🇺🇸June 12🇺🇸

✨Women Veterans Day is celebrated annually on June 12, commemorating the historic signing of the Women's Armed Services Integration Act on June 12, 1948. The landmark legislation, signed by President Harry S. Truman, officially allowed women to serve as permanent, regular members of the United States Armed Forces.✨
