HERizon Kicks Off New Year of Empowerment, Connection, and Growth

October 22, 2026 – Springfield, Massachusetts – The Hampden District Attorney’s Office welcomed 33 high school girls representing 14 Hampden County high schools earlier this month for the first meeting of HERizon's new program year, bringing together new and returning participants for an afternoon focused on building confidence, fostering friendships, and creating a supportive community.

HERizon, an initiative of Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni's Office, provides high school girls with opportunities to connect with their peers, develop important life skills, and grow personally and professionally in an environment built on encouragement, empowerment, and mutual respect.

The kickoff meeting introduced participants to the program's purpose, expectations, and goals for the year ahead. Returning HERizon members also shared reflections on their experiences from the previous year, highlighting the personal growth they experienced, the friendships they developed, and the sense of belonging they found through the program.

Their reflections underscored one of HERizon's central goals: creating a space where young women feel comfortable being themselves, supporting one another, and discovering their own potential.

Following the discussion, participants took part in a networking bingo activity designed to encourage conversation and help break the ice. Each girl was tasked with meeting fellow participants who matched different descriptions on their bingo cards, from being a night owl to having more than three siblings.

While several participants quickly completed their cards, the conversations didn't stop when the game ended. Girls continued introducing themselves, sharing stories, and getting to know one another, offering an early glimpse of the connections HERizon hopes to foster throughout the year.

"One of the most rewarding aspects of HERizon is watching these young women build confidence not only in themselves, but in one another," said Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni. "We're proud to provide a space where they can form meaningful connections, learn from each other's experiences, and recognize the potential they each bring to their communities."

With several returning members helping welcome a new group of participants, the first meeting set a positive tone for another year of learning, friendship, and personal growth.

Two Arrested, More Than 8,000 Bags of Fentanyl Seized Following Holyoke Drug Trafficking Investigation

October 20, 2026 – Holyoke, Massachusetts – Two men are facing drug trafficking charges following a coordinated investigation by the Hampden District Attorney's Office's Strategic Action and Focused Enforcement (SAFE) Task Force and Hampden County Narcotics Task Force. The investigation resulted in the seizure of more than 8,000 bags of fentanyl, co***ne, and approximately $18,000 in cash.

On October 1, 2026, at approximately 8:40 a.m., members of both task forces, along with assisting law enforcement agencies, executed seven court-authorized search warrants targeting four locations, two vehicles, and one cellphone as part of an investigation into suspected drug trafficking activity in the greater Holyoke area.

The investigation, led by the Hampden District Attorney’s Office State Police Detective Unit, resulted in the arrests of:

• Brian Marrero, 34, of Holyoke, charged with trafficking in 100 grams or more of co***ne.

During the ex*****on of the search warrants, investigators seized approximately 8,250 bags of fentanyl, weighing an estimated 231 grams, 121 grams of co***ne, and approximately $18,474 in U.S. currency, pending an official count.

The search warrants were executed without incident at locations on Maple Street, Merkel Terrace, and St. James Avenue in Holyoke.

“The amount of fentanyl seized during this operation underscores the scale of the drug trafficking activity our law enforcement partners are working to disrupt,” said Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni. “These investigations require coordination, persistence, and a shared commitment to protecting our communities. I commend the investigators and agencies involved for their work in bringing this case forward.”

The operation involved the SAFE Task Force, Hampden County Narcotics Task Force, Massachusetts State Police Gang Unit-West, Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section-West, and K-9 Unit, along with the Holyoke Police Department, Holyoke Narcotics Unit, and Hampden County Sheriff's Office.

Hampden District Attorney Issues Statement Following Court’s Decision to Release Defendant Facing R**e and Kidnapping Charges

October 13, 2026 – Springfield, Massachusetts – Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni is expressing his dismay and serious concern following a court decision denying the Commonwealth’s request to detain Mihail Lujan, a defendant facing new charges of r**e and kidnapping who was previously convicted of ra**ng an elderly nursing home patient.

The new allegations stem from an incident on July 16, 2026.

Lujan, 40, of West Springfield, was previously convicted in 2013 in connection with the sexual assault of an elderly, non-mobile, and non-verbal patient suffering from dementia at a nursing home where he had worked as a janitor. The conviction, which resulted in a 10- to 12-year prison sentence, was overturned in December 2025 following a legal challenge involving a technical change in the law regarding the use of substitute expert testimony. That case was returned to the trial stage and the Commonwealth continues to pursue that case.

In response to the new allegations, prosecutors filed a motion seeking Lujan’s pretrial detention under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 276, Section 58A, as well as a motion to revoke bail in the earlier case.

Following initial proceedings in September, a dangerousness hearing was held on October 6, 2026. During that hearing, the Commonwealth presented 18 exhibits in support of its request for detention. The defense submitted no exhibits.

Despite the Commonwealth’s arguments, the court denied the request for detention. Lujan was permitted to be released on $5,000 bail, subject to court-imposed conditions.

Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni issued the following statement:

“This decision is deeply disturbing and represents the court’s failure to center public safety and the rights of victims. This case involves a defendant facing horrific allegations of r**e and kidnapping who was previously convicted of sexually assaulting an elderly, defenseless nursing home patient. That conviction was overturned on a technical legal change, not because a court determined that the underlying assault did not occur.

“Our prosecutors pursued every available legal avenue to keep this defendant detained. We presented substantial evidence, including 18 exhibits, demonstrating why we believed his release would pose an unacceptable risk to the community. Nevertheless, the court denied our request.

“The consequences of decisions like this extend far beyond the courtroom. Victims of sexual violence deserve to know that when they have the courage to come forward, their safety and the safety of others will be treated with the utmost seriousness. Our community deserves that same assurance.

“We respect the independence of the judiciary, but that does not mean we will remain silent when a decision raises such profound concerns about public safety. I strongly disagree with this outcome, and I believe the public deserves to understand why. Our office will continue to pursue these cases aggressively, stand with victims, and do everything within our authority to protect the people of Hampden County.”

The new criminal charges remain pending, and Lujan is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Hampden DA’s Office Welcomes New, Returning Members to Future Lawyers of Springfield Program

October 7, 2026 – Springfield, Massachusetts – The Hampden District Attorney’s Office’s Future Lawyers of Springfield (FLOS) program officially launched for the 2026-2027 school year, with 46 people in attendance – a record-breaking turnout for the program.

The Oct. 1 meeting began with welcome remarks from Hampden District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni and Western New England University School of Law Dean Zelda B. Harris.

The District Attorney’s Office partners with Western New England University School of Law to identify young students who aspire to be lawyers, and to guide FLOS members through college and law school, and into a successful career in the legal system.

The mission of the program is to foster direct and sustained mentorship while providing opportunities to explore the judicial system and the practice of law in Western Massachusetts.

At the orientation, Gulluni shared some of his background, such as his journey through law school, running for District Attorney, and more.

Students had the opportunity to ask him questions, to which one student asked, “What’s one skill we should sharpen when going through law school?”

Gulluni’s response: resiliency. “You will have hard and bad days, but what matters is how you get up, keep going, and learn from it,” he said.

Following the question-and-answer portion, members were then introduced to this year’s FLOS leaders, including Assistant District Attorneys Sean Buxton, Jeff Clarke, Kiara DeJesus, and Nina Signorelli, along with Community Safety & Outreach Director Tony Simmons and Deputy Director Gina Anselmo.

“Seeing the excitement and strong interest in this year’s Future Lawyers of Springfield program is incredibly encouraging,” said DA Gulluni. “FLOS is about opening doors, inspiring young people to see what’s possible, and giving them the confidence to pursue a future in public service. I’m incredibly grateful to the dedicated members of my office who work throughout the year to make that opportunity a reality.”

At the next FLOS meeting on Oct. 15, members will hear from four panelists in different areas of law.
