Today is Imagine a Day Without Water, a day to think about the water we rely on from the first cup of coffee onward. Thank you to Meeting Grounds for partnering with us this year. Stop by for your essential cup of joe, made with Sanford water.

🌊The Fall Flushing Program has begun 🌊
District crews will be running water at high flow rates beginning in Springvale and working our way south through Sanford during October and November. We do this to remove mineral buildup and remove stagnant water from the underground pipes. Another benefit of this program is that we operate many of the hydrants and valves in the water system to verify they are functioning properly so they can be used in the event of an emergency.

For more information on our whereabouts as we progress through the system, please check out our flushing page on our website; https://www.sanfordwater.org/flushing

Sanford Water District does it again! 💧🏆

We are proud to share that the Sanford Water District has won the People’s Choice Award for Best Tasting Drinking Water in New England for the second year in a row at the New England Water Works Association’s Annual Conference!

Water professionals from throughout New England had the opportunity to sample and vote for their favorite drinking water, and once again, Sanford came out on top in the People’s Choice competition.

Last year, Sanford had the distinction of winning both the Judges’ Award and the People’s Choice Award, the first utility to ever win both awards at same time. While we didn’t repeat with the judges this year, having conference attendees choose Sanford’s water as their favorite for a second consecutive year is something we are extremely proud of.

Great tasting water starts with great source water, but it also takes the work of a dedicated team to protect, treat, monitor, and deliver that water every day. We’re proud of the water we provide to Sanford and Springvale—and very happy to know that our fellow water professionals think it tastes pretty good too!

Earlier this month, local artists stopped by to refresh our mini art gallery at the Water District office. Thank you to everyone who shared their beautiful artwork with us!

We invite you to stop by and take a look at these wonderful works of art. You don’t need to have a water bill to pay—or even be a Water District customer. Everyone is welcome!

Our office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.

The artwork on display is available for purchase directly from the artists. If you see something you like, just let us know and we’ll be happy to connect you with the artist.

The Sanford Water District is saddened to learn of the passing of former Superintendent Dennis T. Knowles, who served the District from 1980 until his retirement in 2011.
Dennis was a true “water guy”, someone who made public water supply his life’s work. During his tenure, Dennis oversaw significant improvements to the District, including the development of three new sources of water supply and the implementation of the District’s wellhead protection program.
His commitment to the water profession extended well beyond Sanford. Dennis served as President of the Maine Water Utilities Association (MWUA) in 1989, was a recipient of the Jeff Nixon Distinguished Service Award, served as President of the Southern Maine Regional Water Council, was an active member of the MWUA Water Resources Committee, and was a longtime member of the New England Water Works Association.
Dennis made a lasting difference at the Sanford Water District and in Maine’s water profession. Much of the system and organization we have today was shaped by his leadership, dedication, and commitment to providing affordable, safe and reliable drinking water to the community.
We are grateful for Dennis’s many years of service and extend our sincere condolences to his wife Penny, his family, friends, and the many colleagues who had the privilege of working with him.
Dennis will be greatly missed, but his contributions to the Sanford Water District and the water profession will not be forgotten.

💧 Did you know? Nearly half of Maine residents rely on groundwater for their drinking water.

Groundwater is a vital natural resource that supplies homes, schools, businesses, and communities across our state. Understanding where our water comes from is the first step in protecting it for future generations.
