Throwback Thursday

Prior to a system of fire alarm boxes in Saint Charles, the large tower in these photos served a significant purpose. It was manned by a fireman on "fire watch" sitting at the top of the tower. It was sixty feet tall and stood behind our original fire house near the corner of Jefferson St. and Main st. Unfortunately it along with that firehouse do not still stand today.

πŸš’ Going the Extra Mile! πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ

Members of the St. Charles City Fire Department traded their fire boots for running shoes to take on the Backyard New Town Ultra Marathon for an incredible cause!
The challenge? Run 4.17 miles every hour until you can’t go any farther. Starting at 8:00 AM our firefighters combined for an impressive 188 miles, with our final runner completing over 63 miles before calling it a night around midnight! The winner finished around 3:00 AM!

But this race was about much more than miles.
The event was organized by the family of Braxley, a 3-year-old St. Charles City resident living with a rare genetic disease, to raise money for research. Thanks to the incredible support of the community, the event raised over $20,000! 125 total runners completing 2590 miles.

Before the race, our firefighters had the honor of meeting Braxley and her family, presenting her with a challenge coin and Station 5 patch, and sharing a few special moments together.
188 miles. Helping to raise over $20,000. One incredible little girl. One community coming together for a cause bigger than ourselves.

We’re proud of our members for going the extra mile to support one of our own St. Charles families!

THROWBACK THURSDAY

This is a hook and ladder wagon from around 1850. It was pulled by hand and carried wooden ladders, hooks, and axes.On a fire scene, it complemented the had drawn hose real and pump.In 1861, the fire department was officially formed and a horse drawn engine was purchased. However until this significant change, all the firefighting was done via man power.

πŸš’ Throwback to 1870 β€” St. Charles Fire Department History! πŸ”₯

πŸ“Έ Take a look at one of the oldest known photographs of the St. Charles Fire Department, dating back to 1870!
Over 150 years ago, firefighting in St. Charles looked much different than it does today.
In those early days, volunteer firefighters relied on a simple hose cart and ladder wagon β€” both pulled by hand!
The hose cart carried a reel of hose and a few nozzles. Firefighters connected their hose to the nearest hydrant, stretched it toward the fire, and controlled the water flow by opening and closing the hydrant itself.
There were no motorized fire engines, hydraulic ladders, or modern firefighting equipment. Just hardworking volunteers, basic tools, and a willingness to put themselves in harm’s way to protect their neighbors.
While our apparatus, equipment, and training have evolved tremendously over the last 150+ years, one thing has never changed:
Our commitment to protecting the citizens of St. Charles.
We are proud of the generations of firefighters who came before us and the history that helped shape our department into what it is today.

Today marks an exciting and important milestone for the St. Charles Fire Department and the community we serve.

SCFD has officially placed Fire Suppression Unit 9460 in service at Station 6. This new unit will primarily serve the southwestern portion of the city, along the Muegge Road corridor.

It has been more than 40 years since SCFD added an additional fire truck to our emergency response fleet. In that time, the City of St. Charles has grown significantly in size, population, and emergency call volume.

The addition of 9460 will help reduce response times, while bringing enhanced fire suppression and rescue capabilities to an area experiencing continued growth. The unit will also provide the same Advanced Life Support (ALS) emergency medical care our residents have come to expect from St. Charles Fire Department.

This is more than adding another truck to the fleet, it is an investment in the future of emergency services and in our ability to serve a growing St. Charles.

The City is also in the process of acquiring property along Muegge Road for a permanent Station 6, with construction anticipated in 2030.

We are proud to continue moving forward and preparing for the needs of our community β€” today and for generations to come.

🚀 SCFD AWARDED PORT SECURITY GRANT FOR NEW MARITIME EMERGENCY RESPONSE CRAFT

The St. Charles City Fire Department was awarded another grant today, this time a Port Security Grant for a new Maritime Emergency Rapid Response Craft and related equipment, representing a total equipment investment of $504,063.

The successful grant was written by members of SCFD, who identified the need, researched the equipment, and worked to secure outside funding to improve our emergency response capabilities.

The new craft will replace SCFD's current rescue boat, which was purchased in 2001 and has served our department and community for 25 years.

The grant requires a 25% City match, allowing the majority of this major equipment investment to be funded through the Port Security Grant.

The award includes:

β€’ Maritime Emergency Rapid Response Craft β€” $454,842
β€’ Multi-Band Interoperable HF Radio & Accessories β€” $14,600
β€’ 12 NFPA 1955-Compliant Dry Suits β€” $8,136
β€’ 12 NFPA 1955-Compliant PFDs β€” $7,488
β€’ 12 NFPA 1955-Compliant Helmets β€” $6,048
β€’ Handheld Sonar β€” $9,400
β€’ Mobile Router with GPS/AVL Tracking β€” $2,500
β€’ Band 14-Capable iPad β€” $1,049

TOTAL EQUIPMENT INVESTMENT: $504,063

With the Missouri River running directly through our response area, having a reliable and capable emergency response craft is an important part of protecting both the public and our firefighters.

The new craft and equipment will improve our ability to conduct water rescues, search operations, communicate with other agencies, and safely operate during emergencies on the river.

This award is another example of SCFD members working behind the scenes to identify needs and secure outside funding for our community.

After 25 years of service from our current boat, we're looking forward to putting the next generation of SCFD's maritime response capability into service.

In just the past week, grant applications written by members of the St. Charles City Fire Department have resulted in two grant awards totaling $868,531.15 in funding and equipment investment for our department and community.

Congratulations to the SCFD members whose work helped make this grant award possible.
