Tiny Jail Tuesday! Wheaton Jail - https://AbandonedMO.com/wheaton-jail (HISTORY AND PICTURES HERE!)

The Wheaton Jail is an amazingly preserved example of a single cell jail from the early 1900s. These small jails were typically made of concrete, built to last decades and deter the most rambunctious prisoners from escaping. These cells were oftentimes called calabooses, hoosegows, or bastilles along with city jail.

Tiny Jail Tuesday! Schell City Jail - https://AbandonedMO.com/schell-city-jail (HISTORY AND PICTURES HERE!)

The Schell City Jail sits on the edge of town, lonely, neglected and forgotten about. With little history documented online, it seems this chapter of Schell City's history has been shut for quite some time. Maybe if there is enough interest and attraction to visiting the jail the city will take that as an incentive to clean it up and utilize it as a way to bring in visitors.

Tiny Jail Tuesday! Sumner Jail - https://AbandonedMO.com/sumner-jail (HISTORY AND PICTURES HERE!)

The Sumner Jail was dedicated in June 1906 with the first inmate being Frank Pearson, a horse tamer. The new concrete fireproof structure was to replace the previous calaboose which was set on fire by prisoner George Cheatham a year prior. The first Marshal was known as Berry and the jail was given the nickname "Hotel el Berry". A story reported in a local newspaper is included:

Clemens Mansion (DEMOLISHED) - https://AbandonedMO.com/clemens-mansion (HISTORY AND PICTURES HERE!)

In the mid-1850s James H. Clemens had become a popular merchant around St. Louis. He began his career in the mercantile business with James Clemens Sr. In 1816, he moved from Sparta, Tennessee to St. Louis, Missouri and became a successful storekeeper as well as became active in the banking industry.

Tiny Jail Tuesday! Triplett Jail - https://AbandonedMO.com/triplett-jail (HISTORY AND PICTURES HERE!)

The Triplett Jail's history is elusive, unfortunately, this is the case with many of the tiny jails left in the Midwest. Having documented hundreds of these jails throughout Oklahoma, Kansas, and Arkansas I see it all too often that I can't track down a single fact about the jail before me. Most of these jails were built prior to 1930 and abandoned by the 50s and 60s after people got transferred to county jails instead.

Cass County Jail - https://AbandonedMO.com/cass-county-jail/ (HISTORY AND PICTURES HERE!)

By 1960 Cass County had already had four jails throughout its history. Their fourth one was 90 years old at the time. Calls for a fifth Cass County Jail were made stating that not only had prisoners escaped from the current jail but every grand jury had indicted it as being inadequate, unsanitary and unsightly.

Tiny Jail Tuesday! Cuba Jail - https://AbandonedMO.com/cuba-jail (HISTORY AND PICTURES HERE!)

The Cuba Jail holds a special place in my heart, the look of this calaboose is enough to draw anyone in. Constructed in 1908 the building is a perfect shade of gray and displays Cuba Jail 1908 above the doorway. The area has room for the guard on duty to sit at a desk and watch over the inmates as well as two iron hanging bunks for prisoners and a stove to keep them warm in the winter.

Hermann Jaeger Mansion (DEMOLISHED) - https://AbandonedMO.com/hermann-jaeger-mansion/ (HISTORY AND PICTURES HERE!)

Just on the outskirts of Neosho, Missouri in the small town of Monark Springs sat an unassuming historic home. The Hermann Jaeger Mansion, maybe not mansion in today's standards but definitely by the standards of when it was built around 1865.

Tiny Jail Tuesday! Dalton Jail - https://AbandonedMO.com/dalton-jail (HISTORY AND PICTURES HERE!)

While the Dalton Jail may look small to someone who has never seen a calaboose, it is actually on the larger scale of ones documented by us. The sign above the door to the jail says the calaboose was built in 1898, although the Chariton Courier reported on November 30, 1900, that "The News thinks Dalton ought to have a calaboose." Leading us to believe this was built in the early 1900s.
