Opha Mae Johnson became the first known woman to enlist in the Marine Corps on 13 August 1918, when she joined the Marines during World War I. Johnson, due to being first in line that day, was the first of over 300 women to enlist in the Marines. She was 39 years old at enlistment! According to published history of Women Marines, Johnson's first duties were as a clerk stationed with Headquarters Marine Corps. She ultimately paved the way for future females to serve as United States Marines.

On this day 19 years ago our great nation came under attack. Some families were destroyed and others were brought closer. To this day we will never forget the lives lost and those who risked everything to ensure the safety of others. 🙏🙏🙏
