Many thanks to the League of Women Voters of Metro St. Louis for volunteering their time and efforts to present last night's "Meet Your St. Louis City Judges" forum at the Central Library downtown. Citizens asked some excellent questions of our judges on the Nov. 3 retention ballot and sparked an engaging discussion about the roles state judges and the courts play in our community. We're always thrilled to welcome students to our courtrooms. This week, Cor Jesu Academy students joined as part of the school's annual Exp3 program that allows students to immerse themselves in a career experience of their choice. After visiting the Eastern District Court of Appeals, CJ students visited Judge Katherine Fowler's courtroom to observe a plea hearing and talk to a prosecutor and defense lawyer about their legal paths. After visiting our courthouse, the students joined lawyers and judges for a luncheon and roundtable discussion at Saint Louis University's law school.

On Tuesday, Deborah Dodge, chair of Missouri's Judicial Performance Review Committee, presented.the committee's retention recommendations for state judges in St. Louis City and St. Louis County. Her presentation does an excellent job explaining the merit-based Missouri Non-Partisan Plan for choosing judges and also shows citizens how to access the evaluations of judges in their communities. In short, the committee recommended voters retain all judges up for retention in the 21st and 22nd Circuits. Details in Dodge's slide deck here:

Two AP government classes from Belleville West High School visited the 22nd Circuit on Wednesday and Thursday of this week to watch court in real time. The students listened to testimony in a civil trial and watched some guilty pleas in criminal cases. St. Louis Circuit Judge Madeline O. Connolly, prosecutor Nick Hirst and defense attorney T.J. Matthes chatted with the students after a plea and sentencing in a murder case to help them understand how cases typically move toward trial or disposition.
