Welcome Home, Corporal Mayer

USMC Stephen Joe Mayer was killed in action on November 20, 1943, while taking part in Operation Galvanic, an Allied campaign to capture the Gilbert Islands. Though buried shortly after his death on Tarawa Atoll, definitive identification wasn't possible when Allied casualties were disinterred for return to the U.S. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) was recently able to identify CPL Mayer through DNA and other forensic techniques, and almost 83 years after his death in the Pacific Theatre he was laid to rest with full military honors yesterday at JBNC (Section D, Gravesite 1609). Welcome home, Sir, and rest in peace.

Thank you to all who placed flags, attended the Ceremony to honor our fallen Veterans, visited loved ones, or picked up flags yesterday. You are the heart and soul of JBNC, and we appreciate you all.
