It’s Active Aging Week! This week, we’re celebrating what it means to stay active, healthy, and connected as we age.

Cathy Johnson has been teaching exercise classes at Oasis for 10 years and currently leads the Strength and Stretch, Chair Yoga, and Golden Beats courses.

For Cathy, active aging means continuing a healthy lifestyle, trying new classes, making new friends, and staying involved. Her classes bring together people from all different backgrounds who share a common goal: to stay active and live healthy.

One thing Cathy often hears is that people think they’re too old to exercise, that the exercises will be too hard, or that they’re afraid they won’t be able to do it.

Her advice is simple: “Slow and steady wins the race. You don’t have to be the fastest or strongest person; you just have to come and do the best you can that day. Staying active can help us continue to live independently, meet new people, and expand our world and experiences."

For anyone looking to become more active, Cathy recommends starting small and finding something you enjoy. Most importantly, keep participating!

It’s Active Aging Week!

To celebrate, we spoke with St. Louis Oasis instructor Craig Miller, who teaches Tai Chi and Standing/Seated Blended classes, about what he has learned from helping older adults stay active and engaged. One of Craig’s biggest takeaways? Consistency matters.

"There is a misconception that muscle strength and balance diminish with age. It is harder to maintain but doesn’t have to disappear. As with mental acuity, focused and consistent exercise will help us maintain both our physical and mental health."

October is Health Literacy Month! 🩺

Health literacy means having the information and tools you need to make informed decisions about your health and well-being. At Oasis, we know that learning is the best way for older adults to build confidence in navigating their health.

This October, explore classes like "The Truth about Wegovy & Weight Loss", "Health Audit 101: Sleep", and "Healthy Steps for Older Adults" for opportunities to learn more about medications, healthy sleep, fall prevention, and everyday choices that support your well-being.

There’s always more to discover in St. Louis! ✨

Our recent tour of the Oakland House Museum gave participants a glimpse into local history and life in the 1850s. Built in 1853 as the home and farm of pioneer banker Louis A. Benoist and his family, Oakland House has been beautifully restored by the Affton Historical Society with period-accurate furnishings and décor.

We loved exploring this historic St. Louis treasure together.
