DOJ Funding Update: A Deeper Look at the Cuts - Council on Criminal Justice 05/15/2025

Short-sighted federal cuts to juvenile justice programs will only succeed in driving up the crime rate: more victims, more career criminals, more jails, more cost to taxpayers
An extremist ideology that demands we lock 'em all up and throw away the key ignores facts. Early intervention with juvenile offenders cuts crime. It keeps young offenders from becoming adult criminals. It keeps the public safer. Period.

DOJ Funding Update: A Deeper Look at the Cuts - Council on Criminal Justice This report from CCJ Senior Fellow Amy Solomon examines April 2025 funding cuts from the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Office of Justice Programs (OJP) and their implications on public safety, trust in government, and inefficiency and waste.

The Dept. of Justice's Office of Juvenile Justice has suddenly terminated $70 million in federal grants to juvenile justice programs. This is devastating programs aimed at cutting crime by early intervention.

PayBack does exactly this sort of work, but without one penny from any government agency. 100% of our funding since 1983 has come through the generosity of the St. Louis community.

We find non-profit jobs for young first-time offenders. Our donations fund those jobs, working with the Family Courts in metro StL. The money is then used to pay back the victims. Juvenile offenders learn lessons in personal responsibility, victims are paid restitution, and 80% of the juveniles who go through the PayBack program never re-offend.

Give STL Day is Thursday May 8. Early giving, though, is open. To donate and learn more, go to PayBackInc.org. You can also use the QR code below to donate through the St Louis Community Foundation's Give STL Day.

Thank you
