Eighth-grade students at Washington Middle School began a new unit in English language arts where they’ll be reading Gris Grimly’s graphic novel adaptation of “Frankenstein” by Mary Shelley.

They started the unit by doing a gallery walk of statements related to themes of the story, like “Everyone deserves a second chance” and “Knowledge and science can go too far.” Students indicated whether they agreed or disagreed with each statement. After discussing their stance as a class, students wrote about one of the themes and defended their opinion.

While reading the story, students will explore the ideas of “difference” and “shame" in the story and examine how the narrator’s perspective changes to uncover the larger message in the story.

Great work, readers! 💙

MOSAIC Elementary School fourth-grade students completed a unit about hellbenders by sharing the knowledge they gained with others! They developed creative ways to present information about hellbenders and how people can support them. Methods included everything from pamphlets, posters, games and even a play!

During the unit, students sought to answer the question “How do plants and animals use their structures to survive where they live?” They attempted to answer that question through a series of activities that spanned different subjects. In English, students learned how to pull key information from a text by reading a non-fiction article about hellbenders. In math, they practiced their measurement skills by measuring paper hellbenders to the nearest centimeter and charting their data. In social studies, students mapped the locations of different hellbender species in the United States.

Great work, fourth graders!💙

Staff Spotlight: Suzanne Schmidt has taught in the Mehlville School District for 24 years, including the last 17 at Wohlwend Elementary School.

Her favorite thing about working as a first-grade teacher is seeing students light up with confidence after initially struggling with a concept before having an “aha!” moment. Schmidt also loves the unpredictability of each day.

“I am lucky to be part of the Wohlwend community. I enjoy when I run into former students who are now teenagers or young adults and hearing them say, ‘Remember when we did this in first grade?’ Knowing those little moments stuck with them for more than a decade is the best feeling in the world.” 💙

First-grade students at Wohlwend Elementary School learned to understand and identify the cardinals directions on a compass rose in Social Studies. Students demonstrated their knowledge by creating colorful compass roses using paper plates and placing the cardinal directions in the correct location. Great work! 💙

These Forder Elementary School students are scrubbed in and ready for their first day as doctors! First graders have been learning about human body systems. On Tuesday, they visited a series of stations to demonstrate the knowledge they’ve learned during the unit.

Tasks included assembling the human body based on the skeletal, muscular and nervous systems. They also placed internal organs in the correct location on a body outline. The stations also incorporated a spelling and reading component, with students searching the room for papers with different body parts listed and then spelling them correctly and putting bones back together by reading a word and matching it to the correct picture. At the last station, students were able to experience the frusturation of playing the game Operation.

Way to go, student-doctors!💙

Trautwein Elementary School students are having a great time in music class this week! Third-grade students performed a folk dance to the tune of “The Chimes of Dunkirk.” Fifth-grade students, meanwhile, played “When the Saints Go Marching In” on recorder. Way go go musicians! 🎶💙

From Campus to Career: After graduating from Oakville High School in the Class of 2017, Veronica Mohesky attended Journalism School at Mizzou.

She quickly realized that she was miles ahead of her classmates when it came to experience because of her three years in the broadcast journalism program at OHS. She already knew how to operate cameras, speak on camera, and write and edit broadcast stories. Many of her classmates hadn’t had those opportunities in high school.

After graduating college, Mohesky returned to the St. Louis area producing digital content for Nine PBS in a part-time role. She helped Nine PBS build its following on Instagram and TikTok, continued to build her skills and take on more responsibilities, and has now worked as a Producer since 2023. Mohesky received an Emmy Award in 2024 from the Mid-America Chapter of National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for her work on the program “Power of the Pitch.”

Her advice for current students is to create opportunities for themselves. If they’re working in a role that doesn’t have enough responsibilities for them, be creative and do additional things that align with their interests.

We caught up with five Mehlville High School and OHS alumni in our From Campus to Career Series! They discussed their careers and how their experience in the Mehlville School District prepared them for life after graduation. Visit msdr9.com/fromcampustocareer to hear their stories! 💙

Logan Mueller and Mirzet Softic, both graduates in the Mehlville High School Class of 2022, returned to campus to speak with students in the Geometry in Construction class.

Mueller and Softic each attended the School of Construction, Design and Project Management at Missouri State University following graduation. They shared their experiences in the program and in internships, as well as potential careers in the field.

Mueller excelled during internships at Alberici and has been offered a full-time position following graduation. Softic, meanwhile, will begin working for ArchKey Solutions next year.

One of the coolest parts: Mueller was in the first Geometry in Construction class when the program started at MHS.

Thank you for taking the time to return to our campus and share your story with our current students! 💙

In the Geometry in Construction course, offered at both MHS and Oakville High School, students explore complex geometric situations and deepen their understanding of geometric relationships in the context of real-world construction projects. Students should speak to their counselor if they’re interested in enrolling in Geometry in Construction.
