Charge large items like e-bikes, scooters, and power tools outside when possible. Do not block exits when charging. These batteries store more energy, and fires can grow quickly if they fail.

đźš’ Training today means being ready when it matters most.

This week, the Kirkwood Fire Department hosted the St. Louis County Haz Mat Full-Scale Exercise at the City of Kirkwood Water Plant.

The exercise simulated a nitric acid leak, challenging crews to mitigate the incident, treat a downed hazardous materials technician, and determine the appropriate level of decontamination needed to safely manage the scene.

Kirkwood plays an integral role on the St. Louis County Special Operations Team, providing both Rescue Technicians and Haz Mat Technicians. Our crews also support decontamination operations with Unit 15 Hazmat.

Full-scale exercises like this bring agencies and specialized teams together to practice the coordination, communication, and skills needed during a real emergency. We’re proud to train alongside our partners throughout St. Louis County and remain ready to serve our community when called upon.

Great work by everyone involved! đź‘Źđźš’

Stop using your device right away if the battery smells strange, is warm to the touch, makes popping noises, changes in shape or color, or if you see smoke. If it is safe, move the device away from anything that can catch fire. A damaged battery can overheat and start a fire.
