The closest recorded approach of a tornado to the Gateway Arch in St. Louis occurred on May 27, 1896. On that day, a devastating F4 tornado struck the southern part of downtown St. Louis, crossing the Mississippi River into Illinois directly in front of where the Gateway Arch now stands. This tornado caused significant destruction in the area that would later become the site of the Arch. 

It’s important to note that the Gateway Arch was completed in 1965, so it did not exist at the time of the 1896 tornado. Since its construction, no tornado has been recorded to have struck the Arch directly. However, severe weather events have occurred in the vicinity. For instance, on April 22, 2011, an EF4 tornado caused significant damage in the St. Louis area, including Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, but it did not approach the Gateway Arch.

“Underneath the busy streets of St. Louis lies a rumored network of hidden caves. In the 19th century, these caves were allegedly used for everything from beer storage to underground speakeasies and smuggling operations. One of the most famous caves, the English Cave, was a well-known spot for brewing beer. However, many locals believe there are undiscovered passageways hidden deep within the city’s subterranean landscape.”
