Commemorating One Year of Resilience and Recovery in St. Louis
This Saturday marks the one-year anniversary of the May 16 tornado—a day that significantly impacted our city, but also showcased the incredible strength of our community.
As we reflect on the progress made over the last 12 months, our focus remains on sustained recovery. From infrastructure stabilization to local grassroots initiatives, the "good work" continues across our neighborhoods.
How you and your organization can support the ongoing mission:
• Volunteer: Join local nonprofits and community leaders who are leading on-the-ground recovery efforts this week.
• Resource Sharing: Help us amplify the City’s recovery programs at tornadorecovery.stl.gov
• Commemorate: Attend the Missouri Historical Society’s "One Year Later" event this Saturday (9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.) to hear stories of resilience and connect with recovery resources.
Are there professional organizations, neighborhood groups, or specific events we should be highlighting this week? Please tag them in the comments below or share details on how the community can get involved.

SLATE was excited to welcome participants from the Disaster Recovery Jobs Program currently working at the Veteran Elite Development & Construction worksite. These participants are gaining valuable hands-on experience while earning wages and helping support St. Louis recovery efforts through debris removal, site cleanup, and rehabilitation projects at impacted properties and community spaces.
While these positions are temporary, they can open the door to long-term career opportunities for participants who show up on time, work hard, and are eager to learn new skills. We’re proud to support workforce pathways that help rebuild both communities and futures.

The Refuse Division is upgrading its fleet by installing mounted tablets on refuse trucks. This lets drivers track routes in real time, ensuring that no streets are accidentally missed and residents receive consistent trash and recycling service.
Until now, our drivers were relying on old processes that didn’t allow for route tracking and required more time for drivers to learn their routes. Upgrading this technology means setting up our drivers for success.
We’re grateful to the Solid Waste Management District for supporting this innovative investment in efficiency and service.

This week, the City Justice Center (CJC) celebrated a major graduation at City Hall, welcoming 14 new correctional officers to its ranks. In addition, two officers were promoted to Captain and one to Major.
These additions support the hiring goals set under Commissioner Hayward and strengthen the safety and well-being of both staff and detainees. Working inside a correctional facility comes with unique challenges, and correctional officers play a vital role in maintaining order while upholding dignity. Their impact extends beyond the facility, reaching families and the broader St. Louis community.
Join us in congratulating these 14 new officers and our newly promoted leaders as they work toward a safer, stronger St. Louis.

A Double Celebration of Service in St. Louis ⚜️
This week (May 3–9), we are simultaneously celebrating Public Service Recognition Week across the country and Missouri Local Government Week across our state.
In St. Louis, these aren't just dates on a calendar—they represent the thousands of dedicated professionals who have taken an "Oath to Serve" our community.
Why this week matters for St. Louis:
Local Government Week reminds us that the most impactful services—like clean water, safe parks, and reliable trash collection—happen right in our backyard.
Public Service Recognition Week honors the broader commitment of state and federal employees who keep Missouri and the nation moving forward.
To all our colleagues, friends, and neighbors working in the public sector: Thank you for your resilience, your expertise, and your unwavering dedication to the public good.
