Today is International Peace Day. Welcome to a meditation on the United States’ military spending in honor of this day. https://youtu.be/M1dmp1eIvNQ The Loretto Community Peace Committee is sponsoring this presentation about how much the United States spends on war and preparing for war and past wars. This presentation by Loretto Sister Mary Ann McGivern is meant to be a meditation, an invitation for you to use it later as an exercise in contemplation.
At the end of Mary Ann’s meditation, she suggests listening to this beautiful recording of the “Finlandia” hymn by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius to lighten your heart and to mark International Peace Day: https://youtu.be/FCmdhQLtwag
This ad, sponsored by the Pacifica Peace People, ran in this week’s Pacifica (California) Tribune. Loretto Co-member Carolyn Jaramillo is a member of the group. The Loretto Peace Committee donated to the cost of the ad. (Photo courtesy of Carolyn Jaramillo CoL)

Mike Brown means we have to fight back.
7 years ago today, Michael Brown Jr. was shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson. He was only 18 years old. We love and miss him every day.
We carry his spirit, his love of life, and his caring heart with us as we strive for justice.

We have seen Mayor Tishaura Jones’ administration move in such a direction with the announcement of intentional encampments, which we fully support. We also recognize that much of the administration’s plans have not turned into tangible actions due to dangerous politics and antics at the Board of Aldermen, particularly by Lewis Reed, who insists on playing with people’s lives. Reed is actively standing in the way of the administration’s plans to provide better options and resources for unhoused people.
3.) Call Lewis Reed (314-622-4114) and your Alderperson to demand they IMMEDIATELY ACT TO FREE UP THE ARPA FUNDS DESIGNATED TO HELP PEOPLE, INCLUDING OUR UNHOUSED NEIGHBORS.
