As we roll into the holiday weekend, the Stanhope Police department wants to remind you about firework safety! We encourage our residents to be considerate and mindful of your neighbors, pets, and veterans while using legal fireworks.

In New Jersey, only certain ground-based novelty fireworks, such as sparklers, smoke devices, party poppers, and ground fountains, are legal. Firecrackers, bottle rockets, Roman candles, mortars, and other aerial or explosive fireworks are illegal for consumer use.

Let’s work together to make this Independence Day a safe and enjoyable holiday for everyone.

New Jersey’s Sami’s Law requires rideshare vehicles to display identifying markers and driver credentials to help keep passengers safe. Before getting into a rideshare, always take a moment to verify the vehicle and driver! Law enforcement agencies throughout New Jersey will be enforcing Sami’s Law to help ensure the safety of residents and visitors.

Honor Sami Josephson’s memory by checking the car, and checking the driver! Please be safe and aware.

We are extremely proud to see our very own Officer Popelka being recognized for his heroic events on such a tragic day! Your hard work does not go unnoticed!

This week Officer Robert Popelka is recognized as the Hometown Hero for his extraordinary bravery and service. In February, Officer Popelka responded to a severe structure fire at the One Step Closer Animal Rescue OSCAR facility. He arrived to find part of the building engulfed in flames and several dogs trapped inside. Without hesitation, he moved through intense heat and heavy smoke, unlocking cages and freeing as many animals as possible.

During this courageous effort, Officer Popelka sustained burns to his arms and hands, yet continued working until multiple dogs were safely removed from the flames. His swift actions prevented a far greater tragedy and demonstrated remarkable courage and compassion. Officer Popelka’s dedication, quick thinking, and willingness to put himself in harm’s way reflect the highest standards of public service. His actions stand as an inspiring example of his commitment to the community he serves.

Thank you Officer Popelka!
