Please be advised of testing by Duke today!

Outdoor warning sirens will be tested today, October 7, around all Duke Energy nuclear plants. This testing is part of normal maintenance to make sure they’re working properly and conducted in conjunction with state and county officials. Today’s siren test will be a full-volume test and last for approximately 3 minutes. Some sirens may be tested more than once. Follow-up testing after the regularly scheduled siren maintenance time may be required.

No public action is required.

Today, our Lincoln County Water Rescue Team had the opportunity to train at the newly established NC Emergency Training Center in New London. This state-of-the-art facility allowed us to participate in realistic, controlled training scenarios that closely replicate the various challenges we face during water rescue missions throughout North Carolina.

Today, 21 members today began with a comprehensive safety briefing before team members entered the water for a long downstream swim, focusing on self-rescue techniques and eddy catching.

Training then progressed into multiple skill stations:
• Throw bag deployment and rescue techniques
• Raft operations, including downstream navigation, ferry angles, and catching eddies
• Boat flip and recovery drills in the training pond
• Leadership development, with every member serving as raft captain during the exercises

Following lunch, the facility’s simulated flood town was inundated to create realistic flood conditions. Teams split into specialized assignments:
• One group trained on shallow-water crossing techniques within the flooded town environment.
• Boat operators deployed to the main river, where they practiced advanced swiftwater boat operations.

Advanced boat operator training included:
• Holding station in fast-flowing water
• Moving aft over ground (backing with the current)
• Boat crew coordination and weight distribution while maneuvering in swift current
• Hazard recognition and avoidance

These technical skills are critical to our mission of conducting water searches, flood rescues, and, when necessary, recovery operations. They require continual training and repetition to ensure our personnel remain proficient and ready to respond when our communities need us most.

Today’s training brought together specialists from East Lincoln Fire Department, Denver Fire Department, and the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and Howard’s Creek demonstrating the value of regional partnerships and a shared commitment to public safety.

On Monday June 22, a heavy haul is being transported to the Marshall Steam Station from the NC/SC line.
Approximate time range: 9:00 pm - 3:00 am

Lincoln County residents should be vigilant of the following route:
-From I-485 the transport will turn left on NC-16 E
-Turning left on Gaston County / SR-1992 / NC 16 Hwy
-Continuing forward on Gaston County / SR-1992 / Lucia Riverbend
-Continue forward on NC-273
-Turn left on NC-16 BUS
-Turn right on NC-150
Finish at NC Highway 150 E, Terrell.
