Heating your home with a fireplace or woodstove? A few simple habits can help keep your home and family safe:

✅ Have a professional inspect and clean your chimney every year. Burning wood produces a sticky (and flammable!) residue called creosote that builds up inside your chimney. Yearly inspections and cleaning can remove creosote before it becomes a fire hazard.

✅ Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from your fireplace or woodstove.

✅ Use a sturdy glass or metal screen to keep sparks inside the fireplace.

✅ Burn only dry, seasoned wood.

✅ Install a carbon monoxide detector and check its battery annually

About 1 in 3 Washington K–12 public school students ride the school bus every day. Getting kids safely to and from school involves all of us.

More than 26% of school bus drivers nationwide took part in an annual one-day survey to document instances of drivers illegally passing a stopped school bus. In this year's survey, drivers recorded 56,024 such instances.
