September is Su***de Awareness Month

Su***de can affect anyone — our friends, family members, coworkers, neighbors, and even the people we see every day who may be silently struggling.

Sometimes the most important thing we can do is simply ask.
“Are you okay?”
“Are you thinking about su***de?”
“Do you need someone to sit with you?”

Co-Response Social Worker Amy Brill works alongside our law enforcement to help connect people experiencing a mental health or emotional crisis with the support and resources they need. You don't have to wait until things reach a crisis to reach out.

📞 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline
Call or text 988 anytime, 24/7. You can reach out for yourself OR because you're worried about someone else.

🚨 If there is an immediate danger or someone has already attempted su***de, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

And remember: talking about su***de does not put the idea in someone's head. Sometimes asking the question can be the thing that lets someone know they aren't alone.

Check in on your people. Listen without judgment. Take concerns seriously. And don't be afraid to ask the hard question.

You matter. Your life matters. And help is available.

Every day—but especially today—we honor the lives lost, the heroes among us, and those who gave everything to help, save, and serve.

We are incredibly grateful for our own Staples Fire Department, Staples Police Department and the Lakewood Health System paramedics and frontline workers for the dedicated service they provide to our community. Your presence in our Staples-Motley School District, at local events, and on both our best and most difficult days helps make City of Staples a safe and caring place to call home.

Thank you for all you do—and thank you to the families and loved ones who support you. Your sacrifice does not go unnoticed.

Please join us in showing appreciation to our local first responders today and every day.

With the first day of school for the Staples-Motley School District coming up on Tuesday, September 8th, the Staples Police Department is reminding everyone in the community to take extra care on the roads as students head back to class.

Drivers are urged to be especially alert for school buses making their routes throughout the city. Minnesota law requires all vehicles to stop when a school bus extends its stop arm and activates its flashing red lights. This applies in both directions of traffic, unless the road is physically divided. Passing a stopped school bus is illegal and extremely dangerous. Be patient and always watch for children who may be entering or exiting the bus, especially near intersections and driveways.

As traffic increases around schools, please remember to slow down in designated school zones. Reduced speed limits are in place to protect our children, and enforcement will be a priority. During morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times, expect heavier traffic and be prepared to stop for crossing guards and pedestrians. Staying off your phone and keeping your full attention on the road can make all the difference.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to talk with their children about pedestrian safety, including looking both ways before crossing the street and using sidewalks or marked crosswalks whenever possible. For those biking to school, make sure helmets are worn, and bicycles are in safe working order.

Let’s all do our part to make this school year a safe one. The Staples Police Department wishes all students, families, and school staff a successful and safe return to school on September 8th.

Moorhead Police Department Announces Arrest and Recovery in Honor Flight Trailer Theft

The Moorhead Police Department has identified and arrested the suspect responsible for stealing the Veterans Honor Flight trailer and has recovered the trailer as part of a coordinated, multi-agency investigation.

The investigation began on August 4, when the Moorhead Police Department received a report that an enclosed trailer belonging to the Veterans Honor Flight of ND/MN had been stolen from north Moorhead. The trailer contained approximately $30,000 in Honor Flight apparel and equipment.

As part of the initial investigation, video of the theft was obtained and reviewed by MPD personnel, which lead to collaborating with other law enforcement agencies to initiate a regional search. Working closely with the Fargo Police Department and the Detroit Lakes Police Department, detectives used Flock license plate reader technology to generate investigative leads on the trailer’s locations and identify the suspect vehicle. The coordinated effort provided reliable information, ultimately leading detectives to identify the suspect and the location of the trailer.

On Sunday, August 9, officers arrested 74-year-old Robert Andert of Staples, Minnesota, at the Moorhead Law Enforcement Center. Andert was taken to the Clay County Jail and faces the following charges:

• Felony Motor Vehicle Theft
• Felony Theft Permanently Depriving Another of Property
• Felony Possess/Receive Stolen Property
• Felony First-Degree Damage to Property Over $1,000

The trailer has been recovered and returned to the Honor Flight organization. Detectives confirmed that while the trailer itself was intact, much of the property inside had been damaged or destroyed.

“The Veterans Honor Flight organization is an important part of our community, and we’re glad we could return their trailer and arrest the suspect. It is unfortunate we were not able to recover the property was inside the trailer. However, our detectives did excellent work to piece together the movements of the stolen trailer and identify the suspect,” said Chief Chris Helmick. “This case shows the impact of strong regional partnerships and effective technology in policing.”

This case highlights not only the commitment of the Moorhead Police Department, but also the value of collaboration among regional law enforcement agencies. As Flock cameras remain part of public dialogue, this incident shows how technology, when used in accordance with Minnesota state statue, can deliver investigative leads and support positive outcomes for the community.

The MPD extends its appreciation to the following agencies for their assistance and strong collaboration throughout this investigation: Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, Fargo Police Department, Detroit Lakes Police Department, Todd County Sheriff’s Office, Staples Police Department, Wadena County Sheriff's Office, Wadena Police Department, Douglas County Sheriff's Office, and Alexandria Police Department.

🐕 Help Bring a Police K9 to the Staples Police Department! 💙

The Staples Police Department is raising funds to add a police K9 to our department. Our goal is $37,000 to purchase and equip a K9 that will serve and protect our community.

The K9 will serve as a valuable resource for both law enforcement and the community. Specially trained to assist officers in a variety of situations, the K9 can help track suspects and missing persons, search buildings and wooded areas, locate critical evidence such as discarded weapons, and detect illegal narcotics. Donations to the K9 program help cover the costs of purchasing, training, equipping, and caring for the dog.

A huge thank you to KLN Family Brands for donating a one-year supply of NutriSource dog food for our future K9. We truly appreciate their support of this project.

Every donation helps, and no amount is too small. If you'd like to support this effort, please find us on Venmo at "LEAPINCSPDK9" or scan the QR code below and help us reach our $37,000 goal. You can also drop off cash or checks to the Staples Police Department and fill out a donation amount form.

If you have any questions, please contact the Staples Police Department at 218-894-1841 and ask for Officer Waldvogel. Questions can also be answered on August 4th at National Night Out.

Thank you for supporting the Staples Police Department and helping us bring this valuable resource to our community!
