Just before 5:00 Thursday evening, Company 5 was dispatched to the 900 block of Trout Road in College Township for a hay baler on fire near a building. Engine 5-3 arrived to find the hay baler and a tractor fully involved with a large fire in the adjacent field.
Engine 5-3 initially stretched two lines for fire attack, working to extinguish the heavy fire while protecting nearby exposures. Arriving shortly after, Engine 5-1 laid into the scene from the nearest hydrant before assisting in gaining access to deep-seated fire within the baler.
Given the running fire in the adjacent field, Chief 5 began requesting additional resources, including Tanker 5-1, who worked to place multiple lines in service and stop fire from continuing towards nearby residential areas. Engines 5-1 and 5-3 would join these crews working alongside resources from Companies 3, 8, and 9 to extinguish the fire and wet down the approximately 5 acre area.
Company 5 responded with more than 30 volunteers in Engine 5-1, Engine 5-3, Tanker 5-1, Tanker 5-2, Special Unit 5, Service 55, UTV 5, and a number of fire police and utility vehicles. Crews operated on scene for just over 2 hours with Chief 5 (B. Bittner) holding the command.
We appreciate the support of our mutual aid partners from the Boalsburg Fire Company, Pleasant Gap Fire Company, and Citizens Hook & Ladder for their dedication and assistance on Thursday’s field fire.
