On May 28, 2026, investigators with the Statesville Police Department responded to a residence in the 500 block of Valley Street to follow up on a welfare check involving a juvenile.
Prior to responding, investigators received an anonymous tip alleging narcotics were being kept inside the residence and that the juvenile may be in danger. Investigators coordinated with the Iredell County Department of Social Services (DSS), and DSS personnel responded to the residence alongside investigators.
Upon arrival, investigators made contact with the resident and father of the juvenile, identified as Dylan Matthew Truitt, 23, of Statesville.
While at the residence, investigators observed drug paraphernalia and an unsecured firearm that was readily accessible to the juvenile. Based on the evidence observed, investigators obtained and executed a search warrant for the residence.
During the ex*****on of the search warrant, investigators recovered multiple fi****ms, approximately 27.3 grams of co***ne, and various items of drug paraphernalia.

Work continues to progress on both the Statesville Police Department Expansion and the adjacent Parking Garage. A construction fence screen has been installed around the site to improve appearance and enhance safety.
At the Parking Garage, parking space striping has been completed on all levels except the lower level. The second elevator is expected to be delivered this week, and the overall garage project remains on track for completion in July.
At the Police Department Expansion, exterior walls have been installed and sheathed, while interior wall framing is underway. HVAC installation continues, with approximately 60% to 65% of the ductwork now in place. Electrical crews are continuing preparation for rough-in work throughout the building.
Construction of the new Police Department Call Center is nearing completion. HVAC technicians are onsite installing heating and air units and completing rough-in work. Overhead electrical rough-in is nearly complete, and the call center is expected to be finished within the next one to two weeks.

๐ Usually, Officer Craig is out on traffic duty reminding drivers to slow down on N. Center Street.
But on Friday, his โtraffic stopโ looked a little different. ๐ฆ
After spotting a baby raccoon in the middle of the road, Officer Craig safely rescued the tiny traveler and helped get it out of harmโs way.
We thought Officer Hardy had the market cornered on becoming SPDโs official animal whisperer after all the puppy visits downtownโฆ but Officer Craig may be giving him a run for his money. ๐
From speeding enforcement to wildlife rescue, no two days are ever the same in police work!

Today, on ๐๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ข๐๐๐ซ๐ฌ ๐๐๐ฆ๐จ๐ซ๐ข๐๐ฅ ๐๐๐ฒ, we pause to honor and remember the brave law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities and our country.
This day serves as a time to pay tribute to those who gave their lives in the line of duty and to express our gratitude for the officers who continue to serve on the front lines each day.
For the Statesville Police Department, this day carries special meaning as we remember Officer James Ross White - the only SPD officer to lose his life in the line of duty.
On March 18, 1934, Officer White, age 43, was investigating a traffic accident at the intersection of South Race St and West Sharpe St when he was struck by a hit-and-run vehicle. He died shortly thereafter from his injuries. The driver was later captured and convicted.
Nearly a century later, Officer Whiteโs sacrifice is not forgotten. His dedication, courage, and service remain a lasting part of our departmentโs history.
Today, we honor Officer White and all fallen officers across this nation.
We also extend our deepest appreciation to the men and women who continue to serve and protect our communities every day.
