September 11, 2001.

We went to bed the night before like it was any other night. We said goodnight to our families, made plans for tomorrow, and went to sleep believing we would wake up to another ordinary day.

But we woke up to a nightmare.

We watched in disbelief as our nation came under attack. We watched smoke fill the sky, buildings fall, families search desperately for loved ones, and thousands of lives change forever.

And while so many were running away from the danger, our first responders were running toward it.

Firefighters climbed those stairs knowing the danger above them. Police officers, EMS personnel, Port Authority officers, and countless others rushed into chaos with one purpose — to help someone else.

They didn't know the people they were trying to save. They didn't know if they would make it back home to their own families. But they went anyway.

That is the meaning of selflessness.

343 FDNY firefighters, along with law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, and so many other heroes, gave their lives that day while answering the call to help others. Many more responders and survivors would suffer and lose their lives in the years that followed because of illnesses connected to Ground Zero.

Today, we remember the nearly 3,000 innocent lives taken. We remember the families who never got another goodbye. We remember the heroes who gave everything they had for complete strangers.

May we never forget what happened that September morning.

May we never forget the courage.

May we never forget the sacrifice.

And may we never forget those who ran in when everyone else was running out.
