Thank you to Dr. McConnell, the Board of Education, and the staff and students of Steger School District 194 for having me out for Leader in Me Leadership Day.

I got to tour the schools and watch the kids in action and I came away impressed. They’re learning the 7 Habits. Owning their work, setting goals, getting along with each other and figuring out what they’re good at.

In the fire service, we spend years trying to build leaders. Seeing kids this young already taking charge, speaking up, and looking out for each other was great to see. Witnessing firsthand how our youth are developing confidence and character means so much for our future.

Thanks again for the invite. Proud of these kids and the program the school staff has put together.

September 11 is a hard anniversary for the job, and it hits close to home for all of us. Twenty-five years later, we still carry the weight of the brothers and sisters who didn't go home that day, and the reminders of why we show up and do what we do. Rest easy to the 343 and everyone else we lost. We will never forget them.

Join us at the veteran memorial on Halsted Boulevard at 9:59 AM for a remembrance with Mayor Joyce.
