Our thoughts and prayers go out to Durham fire department.

When one of us falls, the entire fire service feels the loss. We lift up the injured, honor the fallen, and stand beside our brothers and sisters through the days ahead.

As we go to sleep tonight, 25 years ago, thousands of people were doing the exact same thing.

Firefighters were going home to their families. Police officers were finishing their shifts. Parents were tucking their children into bed. People were making plans for tomorrow, just like we do every night.

They had no idea what the morning of September 11, 2001, would bring.

Tomorrow morning, 25 years later, we will wake up knowing the history that they never had the chance to know.

We remember the 343 firefighters who went to work that morning and never came home. We remember the police officers, EMS personnel, military members, and thousands of innocent people who lost their lives.

And we remember the families who said goodbye that morning, never knowing it would be the last time.

As firefighters, we understand what it means to answer the call — to leave your family, put on the gear, and go toward the danger while others are trying to get away from it.

25 years may have passed, but we will never forget.

Tonight, as you hug your family, say goodnight, and make plans for tomorrow, take a moment to remember those who did the same 25 years ago — never knowing tomorrow would change everything.

BIG DAY AT STEM FIRE DEPARTMENT!
We’re happy to say that our new station generator installation is officially complete! This is a big improvement for our department and our community. Having reliable backup power at the station means we can continue to operate, communicate, and be ready to respond when the power goes out and our community needs us.Thank you to Braco Electric Company Inc. for doing the installation and getting everything up and running, to the OFSM Volunteer Fire Grant and Granville County for helping make this project possible!

Projects like this may not always be the most exciting to look at, but they make a BIG difference when it matters! We’re proud to continue making improvements to our station and equipment so we can better serve the citizens of our community.

Thank you to everyone who supports Stem Fire Department.

Just a reminder, even though we’ve had some rain over the last few days, the ground is still very dry and we will remain under a burn ban!

The statewide burn ban remains in effect until further notice despite weekend rain in some areas. Persistent dry weather and increasing rainfall deficits from the last several months have left most of the state needing 10 inches of rain or more.

“While the rainfall we received over the weekend was a welcome sight, it offered little to no relief from widespread drought conditions while being nowhere near enough to reduce our wildfire risk,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “Even the areas that received the heaviest amount of rain will quickly dry out from the sunshine and warmer temperatures. Until we get some additional rain and see more green-up in our forests, holding the burn ban in place statewide is the best option right now.”

While green-up and leaf-out are progressing at normal rate, low soil moisture, dry surface fuels and persistent low humidity are contributing to wildfire activity. For Western North Carolina, excessive forest fuels from Hurricane Helene are more available now than they were in 2025, low water levels in coastal areas have helped produce intense fire behavior where ground fire will likely be a long-term issue, and the Piedmont experienced 87 new wildfire starts over the weekend alone. Extended attack and mop-up efforts will be taxing and long-winded until drought conditions improve.
