Today we take time to remember Sterling Firefighter/EMT Rick Maypother, who we lost 16 years ago today.

"Firefighter Rick", as he was lovingly referred to by children of all ages in town, was a Firefighter/EMT for the Sterling Fire Department for 20 years. Rick was the SAFE (Student Awareness of Fire Education) Coordinator, and each year he visited classrooms at the Houghton Elementary School to teach students about fire safety. His influence in that position is proven today by the fact that multiple of his former students are currently Firefighters, EMT's and Paramedics with the Sterling Fire Department.

On Sunday 9/20 Sterling Engine 4 participated in a regional training exercise hosted by the Westminster Fire Department on Hager Park Road in Westminster. This drill simulated a fire at a location where no fire hydrants are available to provide water for firefighting purposes, requiring water to be delivered to the fire using tankers. Sterling Engine 4 worked alongside firefighters and equipment from Ashby, Hubbardston, Fitchburg, Rutland, Princeton and Westminster to demonstrate the use of a tanker shuttle to deliver a sustained fire flow over 1000 gallons per minute.

A color guard consisting of members of the Sterling Fire and Police Departments had the privilege of displaying the flags during the singing of the National Anthem and during the pre-game ceremonies, Deputy Chief David Day had the honor of throwing out the ceremonial first pitch as part of being recognized as Sterling’s Hometown Hero. Deputy Chief Day is a third-generation Sterling firefighter who has been a member of the department for over 45 years and as a fire officer for over 33 years.
