Come lend a hand at Sterling Nature Center!

On Sunday, November 1, from 11 AM to 1 PM, volunteers from Constellation Energy will be joining us to spread mulch along the trails near the Heron Trail bridge, and we’d love to have some of our community join in!

Constellation has generously awarded $40,000 through its CLEAN Awards program to help repair the Heron Trail and its bridges. This is a wonderful opportunity to work alongside their volunteers and help care for a place we all enjoy.

Bring your work gloves, wear sturdy shoes, and join us for a couple of hours outdoors!

We hope to see you there!

20-October-2026, Time for my annual salute to the wooly bear caterpillar! Warm sunny fall days bring out the wooly bear caterpillar and the folklore associated with it. You may see a wooly bear crossing a trail or road as it searches for a suitable winter hiding spot. They can be active on warm winter days or into the spring season since they over winter as a caterpillar. Here is an article from the November 2019 Shorelines that will give you some more information on our fuzzy friend. Science Friday has a story about the lore and how the wooly bear's predictions became part of our popular culture, The Myth of the Woolly Bear.
